❔
After first breaking into the soul business as a mellow southern-styled singer cut by Rick Hall in the classic Fame mode of Muscle Shoals, Candi made a wise move to the Hotlanta sound and hooked up with producer Dave Crawford for this runaway hit album from the mid 70s! The title cut – "Young Hearts Run Free" – mixes the best elements of Candi's southern roots with a strident smooth groove that worked as well on the dancefloor as it did on the radio. Along with that cut, though, the album's got a great overall sound – kind of a mix of southern and modern soul styles, with a sophisticated approach that worked well for Candi. Other cuts include "I Know", "Run To Me", "Destiny", and "What a Feeling". Also with a nice cover of Al Green's "Living For You".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover is great!)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Together (cartoon cover)
Warner, 1968. Very Good-
Mad mad funk, and the fantastic second LP by the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band – the group that proved to everyone that LA could be just as funky as any other city in the 60s! Prince

Dirty Mind
Warner, 1980. Very Good-
Early work from Prince – really his first full fledged masterpiece! Al Jarreau

We Got By
Warner, 1975. Near Mint-
Al's first major label record – cut when he was an emerging soul jazz vocalist, but before he'd gone totally over the top in super-slick hit mode. The album's got a good 70s LA jazzy backing, with guests like Dave Grusin, Arthur Adams, and Larry Bunker keeping the music moving at a nice pace. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chaka Khan

Chaka
Warner, 1978. Very Good+
The very first solo album from Chaka Khan – recorded after a great 70s run in Rufus, and an instant-classic that showed the world that she might be an even more amazing artist on her own! All those fantastic vocals from the previous albums with Rufus seem to get even more center stage action ... LP, Vinyl record album

Staple Singers

Unlock Your Mind
Warner, 1978. Very Good+
Darn nice work from The Staple Singers – a record that seems to take the leaner, meaner sound learned by the group during their soundtrack years, and turn it back towards the fuller, more righteous sound of the Stax years! The album was recorded at Muscle Shoals, with very solid production ... LP, Vinyl record album

Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
Ashford & Simpson don't need to ask at this point – their in full 70s soul stride here, and it's not good, it's great! Larry Graham & Graham Central Station

Star Walk
Warner, 1979. Near Mint-
Bass heavy funk from Larry Graham – a record done when he was moving into the solo spotlight a bit more than before, but a set that's still got an undeniable Graham Central Station groove! The tunes are tight, but never too polished – and lie in a sweet little space that's somewhere ... LP, Vinyl record album
Warner, 1979. Near Mint-
One of the many 70s "children" of Earth Wind & Fire – and an obscure righteous soul combo from the east coast! The group's led by Osiris Marsh – who wrote all the tracks, and sings vocals over the group's bass-heavy keyboard-driven grooves. The record's not as great as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eugene Record

Trying To Get To You
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
A nicely understated set from the great Eugene Record – one that really has him moving forward in a mature, masculine role after his work with The Chi-Lites! Love At First Sight
Warner, 1977. Sealed
The final Warner Brothers album from Dionne Warwick – and a smooth, sophisticated affair done with full arrangements from Michael Omartian! Average White Band

Person To Person
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Their classic double live set from the mid 70s, and as tight a batch of grooves as you'll find on their studio albums!
