❔

A rootsy classic from Dr John – an early 70s set in which he turns his talents to a bunch of older New Orleans soul and blues tracks, but serves them up in a style that still has plenty of his mystic gumbo in place! After the freer-wheeling longform sprawls of his more psychedelic albums, the doctor goes back to his Nola roots, and works with lots of great help here from Harold Battiste – who co-produced and did the arrangements – all in a style that's got a real 60s Crescent City vibe, even though the set was recorded in LA. Titles include versions of Sugarboy Crawford's "Iko Iko", Huey Smith's "Blow Wind Blow", and other classics like "Mess Around", "Let The Good Times Roll", "Junko Partner", "Tipitina", and "Stack A Lee".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Japanese pressing, with insert – heavy cover and vinyl!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atco, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
Mac really steps out on this one – pushing past his usual hip studio take on New Orleans soul, to a more expansive style that includes performances by a host of surprise guests like Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, PP Arnold, Graham Bond, and Doris Troy. That loping, trippy groove of John's is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donny Hathaway

Donny Hathaway Live
Atco, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
Massively beautiful work from the great Donny Hathaway! After two studio albums that had firmly put him on the map as one of the 70s best soul talents, Atco had the genius to have Donny record this live album before very enthusiastic crowds in Hollywood and New York. The result is one of the best ... LP, Vinyl record album

Otis Redding

Tell The Truth
Atco, 1970. Very Good+
In the years after his death, when Otis Redding had approached near-deity status, Atlantic was digging through their vaults (recently swiped from Stax!) to find whatever they could to put together a record. Fortunately, most of the material they came up with was great – as you'll hear on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Take Another Look
Atco, 1969. Near Mint-
A great little record – and perhaps the most soulful outing by this white rock band with a great talent for crossing over! Two Of Us
Mercury, 1980. Near Mint-
A massive hit for the duo of Calvin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples – and for good reason too! Millie Jackson

Moment's Pleasure
Spring, 1979. Near Mint-
A bit of a disco effort from Millie, given the time, but also a record that still has plenty of nice soul touches – thanks to Brad Shapiro, Millie's longtime partner at the production helm! Millie Jackson

Lovingly Yours
Spring, 1976. Near Mint-
A great point in Millie Jackson's career – recorded when she was picking up more confidence and class, but not going too far into that badass mode of later years! The sound here is still mostly southern soul, but Millie and co-producer Brad Shapiro have warmed it up a lot – bringing in ... LP, Vinyl record album
