Crosswinds

LP (Item 26387) Atlantic, 1974 — Condition: Near Mint-
Also available
Billy Cobham — Crosswinds ... CD 11.99
A masterful album from Billy Cobham – and maybe the best 70s record to really demonstrate the unique place he found for himself in 70s fusion! The album soars with a sound that really lives up to its cover image – but it's also not the heavy-jamming affair of some of Billy's more rockish records from the time. Instead, it's got this wonderful blend of deeper elements that really come together wonderfully – and some very strong use of reeds from Michael Brecker, trumpet from Randy Brecker, and trombone from the great Garnett Brown – all players who give the album a very rich, soulful voice. The set includes the famous sample track "Heather", a mellow cut with great electric keyboard work by George Duke – and other titles include "Crosswind", "The Pleasant Pheasant", and "Spanish Moss – A Sound Portrait".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Rockefeller label pressing with RI suffix. Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

John Lewis & Svend Asmussen

European Encounter
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
A uniquely European Encounter between pianist John Lewis and violinist Svend Asmussen – and one that makes for a different blend of instrumentation than you'd get on some of John Lewis' other albums as a leader! The pair are supported by Jimmy Woode on bass and Sture Kalin on drums – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence Wheeler

New Chicago Blues
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint-
No blues at all – despite the title – and a great set of tracks that showcases the southside Chicago tenor roots of Clarence Wheeler! The album's a bit different than the first two Wheeler albums for Atlantic – in that the group's slightly bigger, and more 70s electric overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Passport

Hand Made
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+
The music's hand made, but the sound is heavily electric – thanks to some great production work that further pushes the spacier sound of the group! As with other Passport records, Klaus Doldinger's working here not just on saxes (which are great), but also on moog, electric piano, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Luc Ponty

Live
Atlantic, 1979. Near Mint-
The mighty Jean Luc Ponty in all his 70s glory – taking the violin from the realm of more staid European jazz roots, and using it to rival some of the bigger fusion soloists of the decade! Ponty's key here is the way he uses the electrified instrument almost like a keyboard – spinning ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Wallington

Knight Music
Atlantic, Late 50s. Sealed
Great work from bop legend George Wallington – one of the last records in an initial run of 50s strengths from the pianist – and a set that features some great original compositions of his own! The set's a bit unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – almost more of a Prestige ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good+
A heck of a great little record – one that shouldn't work so well, but it does! For the set, Sonny Stitt's blowing in front of a larger brass section – and while the prospect of a Sonny Stitt big band record might not sound that great at first, this one really kicks, largely because of ... JJ Johnson

Dial J J 5
Columbia, 1957. Near Mint-
One of JJ's best from the late 50s – a tightly crackling hardbop set, recorded very much in the manner of his classic JJ Inc album! The sound here is a bit more compact overall – with some shorter tracks that really allow Johnson to display his keen sense of economy on his horn, while ... LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Coryell

Coryell
Vanguard, 1969. Very Good+
Maybe the funkiest album that guitarist Larry Coryell ever cut – his debut as a leader, and a fuzzy, freaky set that features some massively heavy drums from the great Bernard Purdie! The set's jazz at the core, but has lots of rock elements too – including vocals from Coryell on a few ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer

Modern Art
United Artists, 1958. Near Mint-
A seminal session as a leader by the young Art Farmer – recorded for United Artists, and a great set of tight lyrical tunes, played by Farmer in his sparkling style – in a group along with Benny Golson on tenor and Bill Evans on piano. Evans is a special treat here, as the 1958 session ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Walking In Space
CTI/A&M, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A pivotal album not just in the career of Quincy Jones, but in the development of the CTI Records sound as well – as this all-star effort is a perfect blend of all the hippest currents that were cooking up in the scene at the time! At one level, the record has Quincy taking back some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
