❔
A key set in the second chapter of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – that time when the group moved from the mellow ballads that were their first early strength, into some dancefloor stormers that easily made them one of the most favored Motown acts of the time! Smokey definitely takes the "go go" in the title seriously – and comes up with some great grooves that feature plenty of his own lead vocals, including some lesser-known gems that we especially like. Backing by the group is great, too – and the overall sound is extremely sweet harmony soul, with a perfect Motown set of arrangements from the backing group – on titles that include "Can You Love A Poor Boy", "Baby Baby", "I'm The One You Need", "Save Me", "Oh Be My Love", and "Swept For You Baby".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(2 Globes stereo pressing. Cover has some wear and aging, splitting in the top seam, and a corroded stain at the bottom seam.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Time Out
Tamla, 1969. Very Good+
Kind of a mixed bag of numbers from Smokey and the group – who are clearly searching around here for a new sound that will take them into the 70s, working in a number of different modes – all of them still pretty nice, thanks to the always-great vocal talents of the group. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Flying High Together
Tamla, 1972. Near Mint-
Excellent 70s work by Smokey and crew – sort of their way of showing the emerging east coast vocal stars how much talent they still had! The record has a sweet, slightly modern sound – with an approach that hints at Smokey's later Quiet Storm sound, but maybe a bit more laidback ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson

Warm Thoughts
Tamla, 1980. Near Mint-
Warm thoughts, and equally warm vocals – thanks to the legendary Smokey Robinson, who's still sounding great here at the start of the 80s! The record's surprisingly charming – and has the laidback, mellow-going sort of sound that Robinson first crafted on Quiet Storm – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson

Yes It's You Lady
Tamla, 1982. Near Mint-
A slightly more-grooving record than some of Smokey's others from the time – done in a style that rolls around in a mostly-midtempo mode. There's almost a gentle 80s groove approach at times, although some of the tunes on the set are definitely in that stone mellow love song style that was ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Innervisions
Tamla, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the best Stevie Wonder albums ever! Stevie's moving into god-like territory here – handling a multitude of styles, all well, and crafting some of the most sophisticated soul of his generation. The album's got the same jazzy references you'll find on the best work by Donny Hathaway ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stylistics

Stylistics
Avco, 1971. Very Good+
A masterpiece of harmony soul – one of THE all-time greats of the genre, and a lasting treasure from The Stylistics! The album really took vocal soul to a whole new level for the 70s – pushing from the sometimes fragile ballad style of the late 60s into a smoother, more mature sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Voices Of East Harlem

Voices Of East Harlem
Just Sunshine, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
A masterpiece of sweet group soul! This was the first secular record cut by The Voices Of East Harlem – a group who'd had an earlier gospel-tinged album on Elektra, but who are soaring out here in a brilliant mix of righteous mainstream soul styles – courtesy of the Curtom power team ... Stylistics

Rockin' Roll Baby
Avco, 1973. Very Good+
The third album by The Stylistics – and a set that's still very much in the high-harmony territory of their first two classics! Thom Bell's still very firmly on deck this time around – arranging, producing, and writing a good deal of the material too – and the Sigma Sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

David T Walker

Plum Happy
Zea, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most badass records ever issued by funky guitarist David T Walker – a set that's got a looser, freer vibe than some of his other albums – and which puts Walker in territory next to Shuggie Otis and Phil Upchurch from the same time in their careers! The set's equal parts jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

Givin' It Back
T Neck, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
A very weird, but very beautiful album by the Isleys – one in which they move into a folksy rock groove, and play acoustic guitars in long spiralling soulful versions of some of their favorite rock hits! The sound's a bit like Terry Callier or Bill Withers, but it's also still got that sexy ... LP, Vinyl record album

O'Jays

Survival
Philadelphia International, 1975. Very Good+
Heady sounds from The O'Jays – a set that continues the more righteous side of the style they developed on early 70s Philadelphia International – a great mix of modes that sometimes has the trio sharing some of the political spirit of The Temptations with Norman Whitfield, and sometimes ... Soul Train, 1977. Very Good+
The Whispers are really riding high on the Soul Train here – perfectly set up with production help from the team of Don Cornelius and Dick Griffey – who really help the group make the best of their harmonies, both on mellow cuts and upbeat groovers! The latter cuts are what The ... LP, Vinyl record album
