❔

2LP set that brings together a load of Eddie's great recordings for the Vee Jay label – cut back in the days when he was a real soul jazz experimentalist, with an incredible knack for mixing styles. Tracks include the incredible "Oliphant Gesang", a wild number that's part Yusef Lateef and part Sun Ra. Others include "Goen Home", "ATC", "Laura", "Down", "Velocity", and "Alicia".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has ring and edge wear with minor splitting and an index sticker at the bottom of the spine.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Eddie Harris

EH In The UK
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
Eddie Harris hits the London scene of the 70s – and like some of the bluesmen who travelled there from Harris' hometown of Chicago, he gets the chance to work with some of the younger British musicians who've been inspired by his music! Eddie plays electric versions of both tenor sax and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Harris

In Sound
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+
We can never get enough of Eddie Harris – and a record like this is a great reason why! Despite all the many different settings Eddie worked in at Atlantic, he still always stayed true to his roots – and a record like this is a perfect example of that – no electric horn, no funk, ... Eddie Harris

Is It In
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+
One of Eddie's groovier Varitone albums, and a record that has a very electric sound to it! At times, Eddie's electric sax is so off-beat that you'd think he was playing a synthesizer instead of a sax, but in true Harris form, he always keeps it funky, and even the weird sounds have a great groove ... Eddie Harris

Plug Me In
Atlantic, 1968. Near Mint-
Killer stuff – and an amazing album that not only showcases the varitone sax talents of Eddie Harris, but also features some fantastic arrangements by Chicago soul genius Charles Stepney! Eddie Harris

Instant Death
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good-
Damn great work from the amazing Eddie Harris – a record that's got a perfect blend of jazz and funk, but still holds onto more righteous elements too! Sonny Stitt with Rufus Harley & Robin Kenyatta

Deuces Wild
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
A great little Sonny Stitt album – very different than any of his other sets from the 60s! The album has a number of interesting aspects – from hard-wailing organ by Wilmer Mosby (who we think is Don Patterson under a fake name), to some screaming guest work by Rufus Harley and Robin ... Ronnie Laws

Classic Masters
Capitol, 1984. Very Good+
The best of Ronnie Laws' 70s material, plus a few new tracks as well – an album that definitely lives up to its Classic Masters title! The music is awash in both jazz and soul modes – jazz, thanks to Ronnie's well-played solos, which soar out in an amazing blend of new ideas and on-the- ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk

Slightly Latin
Limelight, 1965. Very Good
Unbelievable! This is one of the maddest Roland Kirk albums of all time – and it's also one of the hardest to find! The title says "Slightly Latin", but it's more of a mixed-up Now Sound/Bacharach-ish blend of orchestrations and voices, plus Exotica tinges, with Roland playing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre

Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good+
Beautiful work from Jimmy Giuffre – and a key album in the development of his spare sound of the late 50s! The record features Jimmy on clarinet – as you'd guess by the title – but this is no hokey set of Benny Goodman or Buddy DeFranco-type tunes. Instead, Giuffre's using the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Morgan

Expoobident
Vee Jay, Late 50s. Good
One of Lee's totally great hard bop sessions for Vee Jay, recorded around the time of his best early work for Blue Note, and with a good hard group that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Eddie Higgins on piano, and Art Blakey on drums. The material's a tight set of tracks that includes originals ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

African Waltz
Riverside, 1961. Very Good+
Pretty darn hip stuff – and with some great soloing by Cannonball! The record features Adderley's alto fronting a large group conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and featuring a host of hip players like Melba Liston, Oliver Nelson, Jerome Richardson, Ray Barretto, Sam Jones, and Wynton Kelly.
