Os Mutantes (1968)

LP (Item 25837) Polydor (Brazil), 1968 — Condition: Near Mint-
A landmark album from late 60s Brazil! This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s American work by The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, or The Stooges! The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. In fact, Caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including "Panis et Circenses", "Bat Macumba", "Trem Fantastma", and his great "Baby", which is done fantastically here. Great stuff all 'round!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Milton Nascimento

Milagre Dos Peixes
Odeon (Brazil), 1973. Very Good Gatefold
Fantastic stuff! This is one of Milton Nascimento's darkest LPs, with a great set of tracks that have a deep rock feel to them, yet which maintain all of the soulful spirit that was in Nascimento's earlier recordings. The musicians include Nelson Angelo, Toninho, Paulo Moura, Wagner Tiso, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pery Ribeiro

Pery E Todo Bossa
Odeon (Brazil), 1963. Very Good
A rare bossa set by one of Brazil's most famous pop singers! Pery Ribeiro often worked in other, more romantic pop modes – but on this album he's performing bossa work, and doing a pretty darn great job, we might add! The record features some great large arrangements by Lyrio Panicalli, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paul Mauriat/Erlon Chavez

As 10 Cancoes Medalha De Ouro
Mit/Philips (Brazil), 1972. Very Good+
A cool record that features some excellent work from Erlon Chaves! Chaves and Mauriat split this album in half – so stick to Chaves' side, which features some pretty cool tracks that mix together Brazilian instrumentation with a funky easy listening sound from the early 70s. The standout ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philips (Brazil), 1983. Near Mint-
Paulo Moura and Mauricio Carrilho did the bulk of the arranging on this record, which has a combination of fuller electric productions on some songs and spare string oriented arrangements on others. Songs include "Meu Cantar", "14 Anos", "De Mal Pra Pior", "Ha ... LP, Vinyl record album

Som Livre (Brazil), 1979. Very Good+
A nice late 70s mix of MPB and samba – put together with the rootsy feel of the latter, but also some of the more creative song styles of the former! There's a tightness here that's unusual for a samba record – especially at the time – and although the instrumentation features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donovan

Barabajagal
Epic, 1968. Very Good+
Donovan at his jazzy best – really picking up where Mellow Yellow left off, and pushing the jazz influences in his sound to deeper lengths! Mr Leitch is a million miles away from his Dylanesque early roots on the set – and is working in territory that's completely his own – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Santana

Santana (1969)
Columbia, 1969. Very Good+
A crossover Latin Funk classic – with the kind of soaring guitar/organ grooves that were the brilliant sound of the 70s for the West Coast scene, a whole new way of playing Latin Soul that blew away the New York sound of the late 70s. Titles include "Persuasion", "Evil ... LP, Vinyl record album
