LP, Vinyl record album

✈
❔
Very nice compilation of Brazilian tracks from the early and mid 60 – most of which were issued earlier on Atlantic, but which go together nicely on this lively compilation. Titles include Baden Powell and Herbie Mann doing "Consolacao", Modern Jazz Quartet & Laurindo Almeida playing "One Note Samba", Sergio Mendes and Brasil 65 doing a medley of tracks from Black Orpheus, Sergio and Art Farmer playing "Girl From Ipanema", Joao Gilberto singing "Chega De Saudade", and Luiz Bonfa soloing on "Brasilia". 11 tracks in all.  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Pink & tan label stereo pressing. Cover has light wear and some yellowing from age.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Maria Bethania

Ciclo
Philips (Brazil), 1983. Very Good+
A nicely rootsy little album from Maria Bethania – recorded during a period when some of her music could often sound much fuller and more electric! The album's got subtle help from Toninho Horta, Dori Caymmi, and Guto Graca Mello – all of whom arrange Maria's vocals in a sophisticated ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roberto Menescal

Bossa Nova
Imperial (Brazil), 1964. Very Good
Early bossa album by the man who was one of the leading instrumentalists behind many of the bossa era's best singers. The set's fairly mellow, and all instrumental. Menescal plays guitar, and other instrumentation includes vibes & piano. The tracks have a light lilting bossa feel, with some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Imperial (Brazil), 1959. Very Good-
A beautiful early showcase of the compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim – and one of the best late 50s albums from the lovely Sylvia Telles! The album's got a wonderfully gentle feel – one that's a far cry from some of the more emotive female vocal work that had come from Brazil in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Demonios Da Garoa

Samba Do Metro

(Collectors Series pressing. Cover has gloss wrinkles in front.) LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1985. Near Mint-
The cover definitely reflects that 80s origin of the album – but as usual with Djavan, there's a lot more depth here going on than most of his contemporaries ever had to offer! The singer's less a Brazilian artist than a global soul star – singing in Portuguese, but with a quality that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tamba Trio

Avanco
Philips (Brazil), Mid 60s. Good
A seminal set from one of the greatest bossa combos ever – a group who could boast sharp instrumentation and warm vocal harmonies too! The mix of sounds is completely sublime – jazzy piano trio sounds at the core, topped by soaring harmonies from the members of the trio – a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Odeon (Brazil), 1968. Very Good
Great early work from Taiguara – less experimental than later years, but with excellent songs from Marcos Valle, Antonio Adolfo, Wagner Tiso, Chico Buarque, and Arthur Verocai – all set to nice arrangements from Gaya! LP, Vinyl record album

Coral Palestrina Of Rio De Janeiro

Songs From Brazil
Argo, 1970. Near Mint-

Paulo Diniz

Paulo Diniz (1973)
Odeon (Brazil), 1973. Very Good+
Sweetly tripping samba work from Paulo Diniz – and a record that has his wonderful vocals set up with all sorts of groovy touches in the arrangements – thanks to maestro Nelsinho! The album's got that great expansion of samba styles that the Odeon label was doing so well in the early ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Africa/Brass
Impulse, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold
Quite a different album than usual for John Coltrane, but a classic one too – and a set that has the great one exploring his ideas in a set of longer tracks recorded with an expanded jazz orchestra! The format's hardly the mainstream big band of the time – as Coltrane's filled the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Weather Report

Mysterious Traveller
Columbia, 1974. Near Mint-
A new sense of focus in the Weather Report sound – that building, soaring groove that would become the group's trademark in the mid 70s – offered up here in one of it's first and finest examples! The approach is one to describe accurately on paper – but which is instantly ... LP, Vinyl record album
