LP, Vinyl record album

4.50 11

Some very nice pop soul tracks by this lovely vocalist from the 60s! The record features a core group of backing by the Ronnie Brown trio, plus some larger arrangements by Lincoln Mayorga. The sound is nice and soulful, with a bit of a jazzy touch – in the manner of some of Nancy Wilson's work at Capitol. Includes a cover of Percy Sledge's big hit, with the gender reversed as in the title, plus the tracks "It Hurts So Bad", "Nice & Easy", "Are You Ready For A Woman", and "Till The End Of Time". (Cover has a cutout hole and a square razor mark on front.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Love Letters
Era, 1962. Very Good
Groundbreaking work from Ketty Lester – a really important singer who equally skirted the worlds of jazz and soul! Ketty's got a great sophisti-soul style on the set – working with arrangements by Lincoln Mayorga, and coming off with a sound that would clearly go onto inspire Nancy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brunswick, 1975. Very Good+
Part funk, part disco, and all the way soul – served up in this one and only album from Strutt! The group were an obscure New Jersey combo from the 70s, but they step out beautifully on this rare Brunswick album – which has the same sort of funk club groove you'd find on a few of the ... Erect, 1981. Near Mint-
An excellent bit of modern soul from Chicago – a group featuring lead vocalist Joyce Faison, who'd also done some backup work on other records at the time. Like some of the other titles on the Erect label, the groove here is a mix of mellow soul and 80s groove – and the best tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mankind, Early 70s. Near Mint-
Excellent lost southern soul LP for the Mankind subsidiary of Nashboro/Excello. Freddie North sings in a sweet southern style, and he's backed by a nice set of professional arrangements by Jerry Williams. Mercury, 1975. Near Mint-
A big move to Mercury for the Dells, after a pretty successful run at Cadet in the late 60s and early 70s – but the group's still in fine form vocal-wise, and on many of these they're still working with the great Don Davis, who gave the band a strong 70s soul groove, similar to his work with ... Columbia/Roadshow, 1976. Near Mint-
The BT crew definitely take on a strong disco sound on this album, but their up-tempo soul still kicks it nice and live, and the record's got more solid moments than you might expect! A Juice Crew classic, in spite of some less than stellar moments like "Turn This House Into A Home", though Craig G's so fierce on the mic on cuts like "Shootin' The Gift", that we can forgive him for the few tracks on this LP that don't quite live up to that standard. Blue Note, 1975. Very Good-
An essential bit of jazz funk from Donald Byrd and Larry Mizell! The groove's very similar to their classic Places & Spaces LP, and the record's got loads of cool spacey tracks with hot funky trumpet from Donald, and cool waves of synth and sound from Larry. Cadet, 1974. Very Good+
An excellent album from Brother Jack – one that has him making a shift from organ to electric keyboards, but in a mode that loses none of his funkiness, none of his soul, and none of his wit!
