Exciting Gene Krupa

LP (Item 25430) Clef/Verve, Early 50s — Condition: Near Mint-
Despite the fact that he was a showy bombastic drummer in his big band days during the early 50s, Gene Krupa made some fantastic small group sessions – and this is one of them! The record features two different groups – one with the great Willie Smith on alto, the other with Ben Webster on tenor – and both of them are tightly swinging combos with a very mature sound. Smith is an especially nice treat here – as his incredible alto playing is woefully underdocumented, and only really shows up on a few small Verve sessions like this. Titles include "Jungle Drums", "Showcase", "Midget", and "Overtime".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sing Sing Sing
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good+
A tasty early 50s session for Verve – one that has Gene reprising some tunes and a style he used in the Benny Goodman years, but in a way that's more open and laidback – in keeping with Verve's swing-based small group sessions of the time! Even more important, though, is the fact that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Drummer Man
Verve, 1956. Very Good+
Kind of a reprise of earlier days – one that reunites Krupa with Anita O'Day and Roy Eldridge, as the group runs through some material from earlier years. Beautifully laidback blowing from the great Ben Webster – captured here in perfect late 50s formation, with wonderful rhythm support from the Oscar Peterson Trio! An unusual live date for Oscar Peterson – in that it wasn't actually officially recorded by Verve, but done by a fan and handed over to Norman Granz at a later date!
