Dee Dee Bridgewater — Afro Blue ... CD 24.99

One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgweater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. Other great cuts include "People Make The World Go Round", "Love From The Sun", and "Love Vibrations". (180 gram pressing, on Think, with obi!)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Full Circle
Flying Dutchman, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
The last album in Leon Thomas' classic run of albums for the Flying Dutchman label – and one of the most unique as well! There's a tighter feel here than some of Thomas' more free-flowing spiritual jazz sessions – but the sound is hardly commercial at all, either – and still has ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sassy Swings The Tivoli
Mercury, 1963. Near Mint-
Arrangements by Quincy Jones – with titles that include "I Feel Pretty", "Sassy's Blues", "I Cried For You", "Lover Man", and "What Is This Thing Called Love". LP, Vinyl record album
Time & Love
CTI, 1972. Sealed Gatefold
An excellent 70s set by Jackie & Roy – very different than their work of the 50s and 60s, with an approach that's much more far-reaching and complicated – a style that opens up their vocal talents majestically! Gone are the simpler ditties of earlier years, and in their place are ... LP, Vinyl record album
Movin' Day
Janus, 1974. Very Good
Grady's most obscure album – and one that's got much more of a jazzy tip than his other ones. Richard Tee plays electric piano, and the band includes Billy Butler, George Coleman, and Ron Carter – all of whom do their best to keep things hip, and not fall into some of the schmaltzier ... Babs
Chiaroscuro, Early 60s/1981. Very Good
Hard to find reissue of one of Babs' earlier sides, recorded most likely for the Dauntless/Audio Fidelity label in the early 60s. The session appears to be a mix of live and studio tracks, with a group that features some of Babs' hip friends – like Johnny Griffin, Charlie Rouse, Roy Haynes, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pat Moran Quartet
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good
Really lovely work from Pat Moran – leader of one of the grooviest groups of the 50s! The Pat Moran Quartet were unique in that they were both a jazz combo and a harmony vocal group – one that mixed two male voices and two female voices in a nicely swinging way that has plenty of ... Live In Paris
Impulse, 1986. Very Good
One of Dee Dee Bridgewater's greatest jazz albums, and a very important record in her career – as it marked a shift back to straight jazz vocals, after years of working in a more R&B inflected mode. The album's recorded in Paris, where Dee Dee's spent an awful lot of time over the years, ... LP, Vinyl record album
All Of Me
Bethlehem, 1956. Good
Although the world always remembers Johnny Hartman best for his Impulse recordings with Coltrane, we've always dug some of his earlier stuff – like this album – because the sound's a bit rawer, and the style's got more of a kick! The magical Hartman voice is presented in two great ... LP, Vinyl record album
Carnival
Liberty, 1969. Very Good+
Like Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66? Then you'll love The Carnival! The group was formed by three former members of Sergio's group, working in 1969 with stellar LA pop production from the mighty Bones Howe – all grooving in a style that's got all the best traces of the Brasil 66 sound! Open Space – Down Beat Poll Winners In Europe
MPS (Germany), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
A fantastic album that brings together all of the European winners of the recent Downbeat polls – like Karin Krog, John Surman, Albert Mangelsdorff, Francy Boland, Daniel Humair, and Niels Henning Orsted-Pedersen. The sextet is a lively batch of free-swinging European jazz stylists, with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Beverly Kelly Sings
Audio Fidelity, 1957. Very Good
An early date from vocalist Bev Kelly – working here with a backing from a piano trio led by Pat Moran, with support on bass by a young Scott LaFaro! Kelly's vocals are intimate and warm – with qualities that remind us a bit of Chris Connor on Bethlehem, but without as much of a sense ... LP, Vinyl record album
