Alegre All Stars Vol 1

LP (Item 24661) Alegre, Early 60s — Condition: Sealed
A landmark album that shaped Latin jazz for years to come! The format of the set borrows heavily from the previous Cuban Jam Session LPs, but gives it a real New York twist that made the Alegre albums much stronger overall – and much more influential in a wider spectrum. A core group fo well-known players – Charlie Palmieri, Johnny Pacheco, Kako, Jose Chombo Silva, and others – come together in the studio magically – setting egos aside, and bringing their best work to the table in a hard-jamming style that defined the crackling jazz-based "descarga" style of the time. In addition to that, the production style has lots of conversation and hanging out sounds between the tracks, really setting the feel for the album with a great spirit that goes on to touch the music as well! A treasure that's still one of the best examples of the jam session at work – and with titles that include "Soy Feliz, "Ay Camino Y Ven", "Almendra", "Para Ti", and "Estoy Buscando a Kako".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Recent EU Honey Pie reissue, still sealed.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cortijo y Su Combo con Ismael Rivera

Baile Con Cortijo
Tropical, 1958. Very Good-
Killer combo work from the legendary Cortijo – and just the kind of set to show why he was easily one of the sharpest Latin leaders of the 60s! The emphasis here is on heavy rhythms – the sort that set the dancefloor on fire right from the start, but keep things compelling through a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Los Triunfadores

El Gran Combo

Disfrutelo Hasta El Cabo
EGC, 1974. Near Mint-
Smoking 70s material from El Gran Combo – exactly the kind of set that shows why they received so much well-deserved attention at the time! Louie Bellson & Walfredo De Los Reyes

Ecue – Ritmos Cubanos (OJC pressing)
Pablo/OJC, 1978. Near Mint-
A strangely wonderful Latin set with a very drum-heavy approach! Fania All-Stars

Viva La Charanga
Fania, 1986. Very Good+
The Fania All Stars pay tribute to a form that inspired many of its players – but which faded from Latin vogue before the group was properly formed in the late 60s. The session's a nice bit of retro Latin, with some strong late era salsa touches. Titles include "Guajira Con Tumbao" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roy Ayers

Fever
Polydor, 1979. Very Good
A great little album by Roy Ayers – one that features none of his hits, which means lots of fresh material – and which has great examples of both sides of Roy's talents at the time! The dancefloor side of Roy kicks in with "Love Will Bring Us Back Together", an extremely ... LP, Vinyl record album
