Plays New Breed (The Boo-Ga-Loo)

LP (Item 2464) Smash, 1966 — Condition: Very Good
Possibly the best instrumental album that James Brown cut for Smash! Unlike some of the other albums, this one features a set list that's mostly originals – and a number of tracks have a longer groove than usual, which lets James and the band stretch out instrumentally. Titles include "Vonshelia", "Fat Bag", "Hooks", "Sumpin Else", and "Jabo".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

James Brown

Hot
Polydor, 1975. Near Mint-
One of the lesser-known albums from the mid 70's, and one that includes a mix of remakes of old stuff, and some faster tracks that seem to be aimed at the dancefloor. Dave Matthews arranged a number of tracks, including "Hot", "So Long", and "(I Love You) For Sentimental ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Gettin' Down To It
King, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
A great little album by James Brown – and very different than his other work! He cut this one with the groovy Dee Felice Trio – a jazz-based combo that he recorded on their own for King, on another very rare, very excellent record. The band's in similar form here, although not ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Live At The Apollo
King, 1963. Very Good
A landmark album that forever changed the face of live recordings – and soul music too! As has been told and retold often, King records not only had the genius idea of bringing recording equipment into the Apollo Theater to catch James in a smoking live setting – the sort of show that ... King, 1967. Very Good+
Raw soul, indeed – a term that could have been coined for James Brown's vocal approach, and which probably makes one of its first appearances here on a record! The album's kind of a grab bag of earlier sides that James recorded for King, but it's a perfect showcase for his amazing sound in ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown Show
Smash, Late 60s. Near Mint-
James Brown plays organ on this one – an early effort to showcase various other artists that he was producing at the time, and who traveled with him on the road – all those great singers that The Godfather would give time to on his stage – the sorts of artists who would later get ... Chaka Khan

Chaka
Warner, 1978. Very Good+
The very first solo album from Chaka Khan – recorded after a great 70s run in Rufus, and an instant-classic that showed the world that she might be an even more amazing artist on her own! All those fantastic vocals from the previous albums with Rufus seem to get even more center stage action ... LP, Vinyl record album

Barry White

Is This Whatcha Wont?
20th Century, 1976. Very Good+
Kind of a confrontational title, but still an excellent batch of grooves from The Maestro, with heavenly production, and lots of long drawn-out sexy grooves. Cuts include "Don't Make Me Wait Too Long", "I'm Qualified To Satisfy You", "Your Love – So Good I Can't Take ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fountain, 1980. Very Good+
Chicago modern soul LP from the early 80's, recorded for Jerry Butler's Fountain label. The group were one of the few last links in the Chicago soul scene at the time – and they've got a good harmony sound that hearkens back to mid 70s work by groups like The Chi-Lites or Windy City. Most ... LP, Vinyl record album

Naturally Together
SOUL, 1970. Very Good+
Great group vocals by one of Motown's biggest groups to never really make it. This album has some of their best cuts, with a sweet harmony sound, and raw production that works quite well with the band's approach. The best example of this is the cut "We Can Make It Baby", but other nice ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great sense of righteousness and groove – the key mix that made the O'Jays so great back in the day – and which really helped put the Philly International enterprise on the map! The album's miles from the group's simple harmony soul roots – even though those were pretty darn ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
Nice Philly work by the O'Jays – one of their key "second period" albums, and a lost little gem filled with great harmony soul tracks. The political agenda of early 70s Philly albums is mostly gone, and the group's returned to themes of love and romance – often done in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Special Occasion
Tamla, 1968. Very Good+
Smokey and the group do a great job on some lesser-known numbers – all presented with that wonderful warm polish that The Miracles brought to soul, a sound that's always great, even on a lesser-hit album like this!
