Song For My Father

LP (Item 2458) Blue Note, 1963 — Condition: Sealed
Also available
Horace Silver — Song For My Father (RVG remaster edition) ... CD 4.99
An incredible record – the kind of album that only Blue Note could put out, and an instant classic that will sound wonderful forever! The album's truly one of the great ones – one of those Blue Notes that still makes you stop and pause when you hear it, even though you've heard it a million times in Starbucks and places like that. Horace Silver is working here at the height of his powers – lyrical, free, yet also damn soulful, in a style that makes for some of the most evocative jazz-based grooves cut to wax at the time. Carmell Jones is in the group, and plays some of his best trumpet ever – and Joe Henderson really drives the whole session home with some incredible tenor work. Other group members include Teddy Smith on bass and Roger Humphries on drums – and titles include the instantly famous "Song For My Father", plus "Que Pasa", "The Kicker", and "Calcutta Cutie".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed 80s DMM pressing, with Cadre Rouge obi, and sticker indicating that the Blue Note poster is included. Cover has a cutout hole in one corner.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Excellent 70's issue of a number of tracks recorded by Horace Silver in the late 50's – including some (then) unissued material, and alternate versions of popular tracks, recorded with different bands than on the hit. Blue Note, 1955. Very Good
A record with Horace Silver on the cover, but a set that's really more of a Jazz Messengers date overall – as it features a smoking quintet that not only includes Art Blakey on drums and Doug Watkins on bass – but which also has some great frontline work from Hank Mobley on tenor and ... Three Sounds

Black Orchid
Blue Note, 1962. Very Good
Maybe the most evocative title of all the Three Sounds albums of the 60s – and one that really gets at the dark beauty of the entire record! By the time of this release (the group's 7th for Blue Note), Gene Harris and the trio had really come into their own – and were moving past ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mid 70s two-fer that includes the rarest of all the Sonny Rollins Blue Note sessions – and possibly the best!
