One of our favorite albums ever from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – even though it was only issued by Blue Note nearly a decade after it was recorded! The set's an overlooked nugget from that intensely productive time when the group features one of its strongest frontlines ever – a young Wayne Shorter on tenor, the great Lee Morgan on trumpet, and the brilliant pianist Bobby Timmons – working here with a fantastic sense of soul and energy, as so many new ideas and bold statements flow from their instruments under the guidance of Blakey on drums. Bass is by Jymie Merritt, and Walter Davis subs in for Timmons on two tracks – hardly a "sub", as Davis is great here too – on titles that include "Ping Pong", "Roots & Herbs", "Master Mind", "Look At The Birdie", "Back Sliders", and "United".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(180 gram Tone Poet series pressing, still sealed with hype sticker.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Amigo (Sweden), 1982. Near Mint-
A great group set with Bobby Watson on alto, Bill Pierce on tenor, and James Williams on piano! Tracks are long – and titles include "Gypsy Folk Tales", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "Webb City", and "Skylark". LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey

Thermo
Milestone, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A nice little 2LP set that brings together some great work from Art's non Blue Note years during the 60s, recorded for the Riverside label, and originally issued on the albums Ugetsu, Kyoto, and Caravan. The set features all the tracks from Ugetsu, plus selections from the other two – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1957. Very Good
A true orgy in rhythm from Art Blakey – a set that not only features his drums next to the kit of Art Taylor, but which also adds in a bevy of other percussionists – including Sabu Martinez, Patato Valdez, and Jose Valentine! Joe Jones and Specs Wright also bring in additional jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint-
Not the first album that Art Blakey recorded with the title Night In Tunisia, but one that's maybe the best – as the session has these really long, open tracks that are a perfect showcase for the genius of this legendary lineup of the Jazz Messengers! The group here features a tremendous ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey

Witch Doctor
Blue Note, 1961. Sealed Gatefold
One of our favorite albums ever from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – but a set that was unreleased by Blue Note for quite a few years! The set's one of two gems the group recorded in 1961, but which were held back until the end of the 60s – and it features a stellar version of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Sterling Silver
Blue Note, 1958/1979. Near Mint-
Excellent 70's issue of a number of tracks recorded by Horace Silver in the late 50's – including some (then) unissued material, and alternate versions of popular tracks, recorded with different bands than on the hit. Highlights include a vocal version of "Senor Blues" (with Bill ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Hutcherson

San Francisco
Blue Note, 1971. Very Good+
Genius, pure genius! This album's possibly the most perfectly realized set from the team of Bobby Hutcherson on vibes and Harold Land on reeds – a pair who hit territory that's slightly funky, but which is also still touched by the modal spiritualism of some of their earlier work together! ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Stylings Of Silver
Blue Note, 1957. Very Good
A great Horace Silver album – and one of the rarest! The record features some top-line material that virtually defines Silver's post-Jazz Messengers sound – tracks that come out with a hard and heavy groove, yet which also have a lightness in the mix too – a sense of play and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie McLean

New & Old Gospel
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good+
One of Jackie McLean's last "new thing" albums for Blue Note – and a very unique record that features Ornette Coleman on trumpet! The sound here is stark and hard – slight hints of the soulfulness that the "gospel" in the title might imply, mixed with the angular ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

At The Cafe Bohemia Volume 1
Blue Note, Late 50s. Very Good+
A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group was less of an Art Blakey project, and more of an all-around affair – as you might guess from a lineup that also includes Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass! The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good
Classic Blue Note work by Horace Silver – the stuff that soul jazz legends are made of, and an album that showed he was destined to be a huge force away from the Jazz Messengers! Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook hold down the frontline with Horace – playing in a mellifluous style that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie McLean

Bluesnik
Blue Note, 1960. Very Good
A crackling date from Jackie McLean – a set that's got a more expansive feel than some of his earlier Blue Note work – filled with fire, far from the 50s – and really pointing the way towards his new directions to come! There's a hint of modernism in the mix, mostly on the tone ... LP, Vinyl record album
