Sidney Bechet Jazz Classics Vol 1

LP (Item 24513) Blue Note, Mid 40s/Late 50s — Condition: Very Good+
Blue Note LP that compiles a bunch of Sidney Bechet's classic 78rpm sides for the label – most of which were recorded during the mid 40s, in a variety of different settings. Titles include "Blue Horizon", "Weary Blues", "Salty Dog", "Dear Old Southland", and "Days Beyond Recall".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s black b label pressing. Cover has light wear, a cutout hole, and a small trace of a price sticker.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wayne Shorter

All Seeing Eye
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
One of the more avant-oriented 60s sessions cut by Wayne Shorter for Blue Note – a record that's not entirely part of the "new thing" generation, but which definitely has Shorter pushing the boundaries from his previous records for the label! The lineup here is a key batch of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Goin' Up
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint-
A real burner from Freddie Hubbard's early years at Blue Note – filled with rich hues, colors, and tones! Grant Green

Am I Blue
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good+
One of Grant Green's mellowest albums – a haunting set of intimate ballads and blues, played with a quintet that includes John Patton on organ, Joe Henderson on tenor, and Johnny Coles on trumpet. Henderson and Coles give the album a very different feel than the usual Grant Green soul bop ... LP, Vinyl record album

McCoy Tyner & Jackie McLean

It's About Time
Blue Note, 1985. Near Mint-
The leaders are sporting some serious 80s fashions on the cover – but the record's got a really solid sort of sound – and an approach that strongly shows the growth in both players since their earlier years at Blue Note! Tyner's a musician who really took off in strides during the 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Some of the best early work by Prez – all recorded in small combo sessions for Aladdin Records during the years 1945 through 1948. Blue Note, Late 50s. Very Good
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his ... Miles Davis

Sketches Of Spain
Columbia, 1960. Very Good
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

On A Clear Day
Impulse, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the best Shirley Scott albums ever – a wonderfully groovy little set that seems to stand head and shoulders above some of her other trio dates of the 60s! Shirley really hits a nice clean groove here – a sense of tone we don't always hear this beautifully on earlier Prestige ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
The title's exploding with Mingus, and the album is too – a completely classic effort for Impulse Records that's easily one of Charles' best of the 60s! Things are reigned in somewhat from the Mingus years at Atlantic or Candid, but the sound is still great – almost more focused than ... LP, Vinyl record album
