Reflections

LP (Item 24512) Verve, 1963 — Condition: Very Good
Also available
Stan Getz — Reflections ... CD 6.99
A lost chapter in the Stan Getz sound of the 60s – an album that features Stan blowing in front of some beautiful backdrops set by Lalo Schifrin and Claus Ogerman! The sound is super mellow – dreamy, but never sleepy – with Stan blowing in these soulful, magical, exploratory lines that sweep and swirl with his best 60s work. The sound is incredible – a whole new level of genius to a player who'd already recorded in so many other strong modes at the time – and titles include "Sleeping Bee", "Nitetime Street", "Early Autumn", "Charade", "Love", and "Reflections".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono MGM pressing. Cover has minimal wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good+
An incredibly haunting session that has Stan's edgey alto fronting some of Russ Garcia's arch-modernist string arrangements – similar to those that he contributed to other Verve albums of the same style. Getz maintains a wonderfully breathy tone that floats above the orchestrations, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Soul Call
Verve, 1966. Near Mint-
An overlooked gem from the 60s – Duke Ellington work that was recorded as part of the famous Duke & Ella At The Cote D'Azur album, but issued separately, under the name Soul Call! Bill Evans & Shelly Manne

Empathy
Verve, 1962. Very Good Gatefold
The cover co-credits Bill Evans and Shelly Manne as the leader of the set – and that distinction's an important one – as the record has a slightly different feel than some of Bill's other 60s work for Verve! The sound is often a bit stronger, somewhat bolder – and although Manne's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar Peterson

Oscar Peterson Trio Plays
Verve, 1964. Very Good
The Oscar Peterson Trio plays – and pretty nicely too! The album's got a simple, unassuming cover and title – but it delivers some rock-solid grooves that are very much in the spirit of Peterson's famous sound in the 60s – that classic combination of piano, bass, and drums ... Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges

Back To Back
Verve, 1959. Good
Duke Ellington makes a rare Verve appearance on this classic album – and works strongly in the mode of earlier sides recorded for the label by Johnny Hodges! Stan Getz & Laurindo Almeida

Stan Getz With Laurindo Almeida
Verve, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

Got My Mojo Workin'
Verve, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
The title's a bit bluesy, and the record is too – one of the grittier collaborations between Hammond legend Jimmy Smith and ultra-hip arranger Oliver Nelson – who manages to make the whole thing come across with all the right soul styles in the end! There's definitely a nod to the ... LP, Vinyl record album
