This Is Determination Problems (original pressing)

LP (Item 2445) Ear Wax/Wonderland, 1978 — Condition: Sealed
An obscure little funky group from Flint, Michigan, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the best tracks! There's a slight jazzy finish to some of the cuts too, a deeper sound that makes Hunt's Determination stand out strongly from their contemporaries – even some of the better-known groups of the time. And although indie, there's a real polish to the whole record – a well-conceived sound that comes off beautifully from start to finish, and which has always made this one a standout for collectors! Titles include "Loneliness", "Danceland", "Problems", "Number One Lady", "I Got My Nut", and "Where The Funk Comes From".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed copy.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Deniece Williams

Niecy
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint-
Totally great work from Deniece Williams – still mostly free from the tinny pop of later years, and done in a solidly soulful style at Sigma Sound, with arrangements and production from the mighty Thom Bell! The groove is almost an update of 70s Philly, with traces of the maturing mellow ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1978. Sealed
A sweet little album from Shotgun – one of those 70s funk ensembles who never cracked the big time, but who manage to sound all that much fresher because of that! The set's a nice mix of full funk tracks and a few more laidback soul numbers – often heavy on the basslines, in the way ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Jenkins

Ton-Ton Macoute!
Atco, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent bit of raw funky southern soul from Johnny Jenkins – recorded in Macon, GA, and one of the last relics of the relations that Atlantic Records had with all of the little local scenes in the south! Ton-Ton Macoute is one of those records that manages to blend funk, blues, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chic

C'est Chic
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+
A massive set from the legendary Chic – and a set that has the dancefloor combo coming down perfectly throughout! Blue Note, 1975. Very Good+
A great record from the mid 70s – one that has Marlena Shaw further developing her style as a sophisticated soul diva with a sharp modern edge! Weather Report (1971)
Columbia, 1971. Near Mint-
The groundbreaking first album from Weather Report – a massive session that took fusion to a whole new level for the 70s! John Coltrane

Blue Train
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really ...
