Bill Evans with Jeremy Steig — What's New ... CD 14.99
One of Bill Evans' most beautiful albums from the time – and one that features the fantastic team of Jeremy Steig and Eddie Gomez, who were cutting some beautiful records for other labels at the time. Steig's flute later got very silly, but at this point, he's got a raw stripped-down sound that works perfectly with Gomez's warm, slightly funky basslines – making for a slightly soulful approach that really transforms the session. Evans is no slouch either – and the youthful company makes him play some of his best bits in years – on titles that include "Time Out For Chris", "So What", "Spartacus Love Theme", and "Autumn Leaves".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo MGM pressing. Cover has ring & edge wear, light splitting on the spine.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A classic from Wes Montgomery – and exactly the kind of record that made him a legend in the 60s! Count Basie and Quincy Jones were always a mighty mighty combination – and there's no finer proof of that fact than this sweet little set! Artie Shaw

Sequence In Music
Verve, 1956. Very Good
Way more than just another Shaw set of trad jazz – as the group's a small one, with Tal Farlow on guitar, Hank Jones on piano, and Joe Roland on vibes – and the tracks are all nice and long, and in a Verve style too! Shaw penned four of the six tunes – "Sunny Side Up", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Early 60s. Sealed
Excellent Verve work from Herbie – a sweet little set with a nice Latin undercurrent! The style here is similar to that of Herbie's Flautista album – and has some larger arrangements from a nonet set the backdrop for some evocative flute solos from Mann. The instrumentation is very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Portrait Of Duke Ellington
Verve, 1960. Very Good+
A portrait of Duke, done by Dizzy – and one that's got a whole different feel than you might think! Gillespiana
Verve, 1960. Very Good+
A great burner from Diz – and one that features a large group, long tracks, and some stellar early work from Lalo Schifrin! Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint-
Charlie Parker takes on the music of Cole Porter – with results that make for some of his most classic moments at Verve! Parker's horn is as hard-bitten as always, but it's also working here in a slightly lyrical vibe – one that brings out the warmth that Charlie could have at just the ... LP, Vinyl record album

A sweet little large group session from Gerry – a bit harder swinging than some of his mid 50s small group work, but still with that mellifluous glide that's the trademark Mulligan sound! Miles Davis

Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... Houston Person

Pure Pleasure
Mercury, 1976. Very Good+
Slicker than usual for Houston Person, but still a pretty nice album of tighly produced R&B-oriented jazz. The group includes a lot of hip players, like Cecil Bridgewater, Paul Griffin, and Bruce Nazarian – and the record has arrangements by Jimmy Roach. Tracks are long, and titles ...
