Knight Music

LP (Item 23842) Atlantic, Late 50s — Condition: Sealed
Originally: 18.99
Great work from bop legend George Wallington – one of the last records in an initial run of 50s strengths from the pianist – and a set that features some great original compositions of his own! The set's a bit unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – almost more of a Prestige or Blue Note-styled date – as Wallington's loose, open, and really hits his groove – working alongside Teddy Kotick on bass and Nick Stabulis on drums, both players whose understated approach lets Wallington sparkle even more in the spotlight. The complexity of his performance is wonderful – even while swinging – and titles include "World Weary", "Billie's Tune", "Godchild", "Serendipity", and "Up Jumped The Devil".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s Scottish pressing, on GI – with slight cover variation.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Plenty plenty soul here – as Milt Jackson's moving away from the Modern Jazz Quartet, and working with a great group of players that really expand his sound! The three or four shades of the blues here are all pretty darn deep – as Charles Mingus is returning to the soulful gospel-influenced mode he swung big in the early 60s! Modern Jazz Quartet

Lonely Woman
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Truly one of the Modern Jazz Quartet's greatest albums – and a set that has an edge and a darkness that's missing from some of their other Atlantic records!
