Knight Music

LP (Item 23842) Atlantic, Late 50s — Condition: Near Mint-
Great work from bop legend George Wallington – one of the last records in an initial run of 50s strengths from the pianist – and a set that features some great original compositions of his own! The set's a bit unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – almost more of a Prestige or Blue Note-styled date – as Wallington's loose, open, and really hits his groove – working alongside Teddy Kotick on bass and Nick Stabulis on drums, both players whose understated approach lets Wallington sparkle even more in the spotlight. The complexity of his performance is wonderful – even while swinging – and titles include "World Weary", "Billie's Tune", "Godchild", "Serendipity", and "Up Jumped The Devil".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Early 90s Japanese pressing, with obi and insert – AMJY-1275. Obi has light aging.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+
A surprisingly great album from Herbie Mann – especially considering that it's based around a Broadway score! The set goes way beyond the source of the tunes, though – and Herbie's combo makes some great groovy magic out of the music – often with some sweet Latin touches, as you'd ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+
The Modern Jazz Quartet with a very noteworthy addition – the great Sonny Rollins, whose work on this record really makes it a cut above the usual MJQ outing for Atlantic! As on the quartet's previous Music Inn album with Jimmy Giuffre, the addition of a reed player really inflects their ... LP, Vinyl record album

This session shouldn't work, but it does – and beautifully! By all means, an album that includes Diz, Art Blakey, Monk, and Sonny Stitt playing together should be a first-rate snoozer, with hackneyed performances of common-denominator material that they can all get their hooks around – ... Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
Herbie Mann's opening plenty of windows with this one – and plenty of doors too – really letting some new influences come to his music, thanks to the presence of Sonny Sharrock on guitar and Roy Ayers on vibes! The album's one of Herbie's wildest from the 60s – and the mix of ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great addition to the Modern Jazz Quartet – as the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre brings a sharp modern edge to the record! Portrait Of The Artist
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good+
Excellent early modern work from Brookmeyer – emerging here during a brief period when he was really taking changes as a leader, and making a strong name for himself on both valve trombone and piano. A killer – one of the best from Prestige during the runaway classic years of the early 70s!
