❔
What a strange one! The title says "Willie Mitchell Live", but then the back says "All tracks previously released on Hi Records." Clearly, the Memphis bunch are knob-twiddling here, and adding fake applause to some of Willie's better instrumental moments from the old days. The good thing is that because the tracks are older, the record sounds better than it might have if it was a live session. Titles include "Smokie Part II", "Boot Leg", "Bum Daddy", "20 - 75", "Pin Head", and of course, "Soul Serenade".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s issue. Includes Hi inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch and light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Full Of Fire
Hi Records, 1976. Very Good+
Hi Records perfection from the mighty Al Green – slightly later than some of his key early hits, but a record that shows Green still taking fire on all burners! Hi Records, 1972. Very Good
A damn great bit of work from the legendary Al Green – maybe one of his best records ever – and in fact, maybe one of greatest soul albums of all time! From South Africa To South Carolina
Arista, 1975. Good Gatefold
A 70s soul classic – and the closest that Gil Scott-Heron ever came to having a hit! The album's best known for its anthemic classic "Johannesburg" – one of the first popular tunes to really push the cause of a free South Africa – but the whole album's a winner, filled ... LP, Vinyl record album

Force Of Nature

Unemployment Blues
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good
Nice Philly groove record by this obscure funky band from the 70's. The title cut, "Unemployment Blues", is a brassy funky track with political lyrics, but our favorite cuts on here are the smoother soul cuts, like "Baby I'm Yours" and "Toy Ball", which has a nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Esther Williams

Bustin' Out
Friends & Co, 1978. Very Good+
Before you ask, this record doesn't include her classic break cut "Last Night Changed It All". It does, however, feature some excellent clubby groovers, with arrangements by Eddie Drennon, and a soulful New York feel. Esther's voice is great, as always, and titles include "I Need ... Atlantic, 1975. Very Good Gatefold
Classic Philly Spinners – with Philippe Wynne on lead vocals, and Thom Bell arranging and producing with that hit sound he gave the group during the 70s! Jorge Santana

Jorge Santana
Tomato, Mid 70s. Very Good
A stone 70s classic from Carlos Santana's lesser-known brother – a set that effortlessly brings together Latin and soul, often with the same sort of vibe as the Coke Escovedo records on Mercury from the same time! Jorge plays guitar, but lead vocals are from Richard Bean (of Malo and Sapo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Of Soul
Checker, 1967. Very Good+
Fantastic bit of soul by Gene Chandler, and despite the "hit" referred to in the title, the album's a great batch of stuff that doesn't really see the light of day that often! Includes his great remake of "Rainbow", titled "Rainbow 65", and featuring some amazing live ... LP, Vinyl record album
