LP (Item 2355) Mainstream, 1972 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

One of the bolder records from tenor saxophonist Paul Jeffrey – a player from the east coast scene who recorded most strongly for Mainstream records in the early 70s! The group on this album is relatively large – directed by Ernie Wilkins, but with modes that are a lot looser and more angular than some of Ernie's earlier charts – with very lively interplay between Jeffrey's tenor, and other horns that include a young Hamiet Bluiett on flute and baritone, Joe Gardner on trumpet, Stuart Butterfield on French horn, and JC Williams on bass clarinet. Bluiett is great here, and really gives the record a distinct vibe – and other surprises include George Cables on piano, TS Monk Jr on drums, and both Wilbur Ware and Stanley Clarke on bass. Titles include"FU", "Immigration", "Motor Drive", "Ina", "Kim", "Rodan", and "Bianca".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has surface wear and some aging.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Roy Haynes

Senyah
Mainstream, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
A real standout in the career of drummer Roy Haynes – and a sweet set of spiritual jazz from the 70s, unlike most other albums that Haynes ever cut! Charles Williams

Charles Williams
Mainstream, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
Soulful alto work from Charles Williams – a player who sounds a bit like Hank Crawford here, but a fair bit funkier! Hal Galper

Inner Journey
Mainstream, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
Pianist Hal Galper may be on an inner journey here – but he works with plenty of outward flow – really stepping out in an acoustic trio setting with the same sort of vibe that he brings to his work on Fender Rhodes! The lineup here is a bit unusual – as Dave Holland makes a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herb Geller

Gypsy
Atco, 1959. Very Good+
A familiar concept, but an incredibly hip album – versions of tunes from the musical Gypsy, all played by an incredible group led by altoist Herb Geller! RCA, 1959. Very Good+
A pretty darn great record, and a lot more swinging than you'd expect! The basic theme is the Wizard Of Oz – but Shorty makes the tunes groove way way more than they ever did, and thanks to help from hip players like Jimmy Giuffre, Herb Geller, and Bud Shank, the tracks have loads of ... Art Farmer

Brass Shout
United Artists, 1959. Near Mint-
A great little album by this wonderful trumpeter – and one that we passed up for years because we were afraid of the words "brass" and "shout" in the title! If you're a Farmer fan, though, don't worry about this being some sort of snoozy "bold n brassy" session ... LP, Vinyl record album
FPM, Mid 70s. Near Mint-
