❔

A masterpiece of harmony soul – one of THE all-time greats of the genre, and a lasting treasure from The Stylistics! The album really took vocal soul to a whole new level for the 70s – pushing from the sometimes fragile ballad style of the late 60s into a smoother, more mature sound that was impeccably produced, yet still had all the depth of feeling as before! Maestro Thom Bell is the man to thank for the greatness of this album – as his production and musical vision really helped The Stylistics hit levels that few other groups like this were reaching at the time. Titles include their seminal long version of "People Make the World Go Round" – which, at 6 minutes in length, was really unusual for the time. Other titles include "Stop Look & Listen", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "You're A Big Girl Now", "If I Love You", "Ebony Eyes", and "You Are Everything".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover is lightly bent at the bottom corners.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stylistics

Round 2 (no fists)
Avco, 1972. Very Good+
Landmark harmony soul from The Stylistics – a set that's every bit as wonderful as their debut, with the kind of sweet, soulful sound that got played over and over and over and over again back in the day! The album's got a subtle sort of power, though – one that lies not only in its ... LP, Vinyl record album

Softones

Softones
Avco, 1973. Sealed
A stellar first set from The Softones – labelmates of The Stylistics in their early years, and a group who really share a similar sense of east coast harmony soul! There's a nicely fragile approach to the group at all the best moments – a style that's better than shakey indie soul, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gwen McCrae

Gwen McCrae (1981)
Atlantic, 1981. Near Mint-
Seminal 80s groove from 70s Miami soul star Gwen McCrae – reinventing herself here for the new decade with a totally different sound! Hi Records, 1978. Sealed
A bit late in the classic Hi years, but Ann's still going strong – in a smooth southern style that recalls the best 70s work by singers like Millie Jackson or Shirley Brown. In fact, Ann takes a hit at the "Shirley/Barbara" answer song cycle that kept going on after Shirley's " ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Jarreau

All Fly Home

Club Nouveau

Life Love & Pain
Warner/King Jay, 1986. Near Mint-
A seminal bit of crossover soul from the mid 80s – and the standout effort from California trio Club Nouveau! Manhattans

Back To Basics
Columbia, 1986. Near Mint-
The Manhattans get back to basics, but they're also working with a sound that's a bit smoother and more contemporary than before – a mix of slightly grooving rhythms and mellower quiet storm moments, the latter of which is especially well-suited to their vocals! There's a bit less ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Mingus Ah Um
Columbia, 1959. Very Good+
One of Charles Mingus' true classics – and an essential album in any jazz collection! Paul Humphrey

Me & My Drums
Stanson, 1979. Very Good+
A later album by Paul Humphrey, and with production that's a little bit rawer than some of his other 70's releases. The music's made by just Paul and Tony Drake, and the two of them play drums, bass, and lots of electronic keyboards and Arps – in this kind of scatter-shot approach to jazz ...
