Desire Develops An Edge (2LP pressing)

LP (Item 23448) American Clave, 1983 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP
Kip Hanrahan's records are always better than we expect – and although it pains us, we really have to give him credit for mixing together so many diverse influences, especially in the early 80s, when not that many folks were doing things like this. The record features players that include like minded jazzers like Steve Swallow and Arto Linday, Latin percussionists like Jerry Gonzalez and Milton Cardona, and even the legendary Jack Bruce, who sings on a few tracks. The result is a captivating blend of all elements involved, served up with a nice warm production style that doesn't stifle, but which gels everything nicely. Titles include "Two", "Far From Freetown", "Trust Me Yet?", "Nancy", and "Sara Wade".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

American Clave, 1987. Near Mint-
Hanrahan's 3rd LP for American Clave – and slightly more of a confused effort than the first two, although still with a tremendous vision that marks it as an incredibly lucky bit of work to come out of the often-turgid New York scene of the mid 80s! Hanrahan's got no qualms about baring ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann & The Afro-Jazz Sextet + Four Trumpets

Common Ground
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good
A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! The group's billed as the Afro-Jazz Sextet– but has a strong Latin vibe as well – a bit of an echo of the experiments Herbie Mann did with Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk

Brilliant Corners
Riverside, 1956. Near Mint-
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Monk's piano and compositions are every bit as great as before ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobbi Humphrey

Tailor Made
Epic, 1977. Very Good
Sure, it's after the Blue Note/Larry Mizell years – but Bobbi's still kicking ass! Instead of Larry Mizell, Bobbi's working with Skip Scarborough – and she's hitting a groove that's a bit smoother and more modern than before, but every bit as sweetly funky and seriously soulful. Bobbi ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson & Coleman Hawkins

Bean Bags
Atlantic, 1958. Near Mint-
A wonderful little record – a real standout in both the careers of Milt Jackson and Coleman Hawkins! The album captures Hawk during his great later years – that time when his sound was even more soulful and inventive than ever – with lots of odd modern undercurrents that really ... Yusef Lateef

Complete Yusef Lateef
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good-
A soulful late 60s outing for Brother Yusef – one of his first, and one of his best, albums for Atlantic! Despite the misleading title, this isn't really the "complete" Yusef Lateef (it would have to be a 50 LP set for that!) – but the record is a nice slice of Yusef's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1960. Very Good-
Fantastic work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of their greatest performances from the seminal early 60s years! The band at this time includes Cannon on alto, Nat on cornet, Victor Feldman on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and although Feldman's not as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good
Herbie Mann's at the Village Gate – really wailing away in a set of extended numbers that not only set a whole new standard for live recording in jazz, but which also pushed forward the role of the flute in the music as well! There's a heck of a lot of soul in the grooves here – served ... LP, Vinyl record album
