Turn It Over

LP (Item 23427) Polydor, 1970 — Condition: Very Good

Although Tony Williams started out as one of the most subtle drummers of the 60s, this album has him coming a long way from his "new thing" Blue Note recordings – and taking off with enough power to reach the moon! The group featured is Williams classic Lifetime lineup – with John McLaughlin and Larry Young, who was also reaching far past his Blue Note groove here – and bassist Jack Bruce, who was working his jazz chops strongly after his years in Cream. There's a raw power here that cannot be denied – a ferocity that must have been incredibly fresh at the time, and which is still, today, one of the clearest visions of a jazz rock fusion that was soon muddied too quickly in the heady waters of 70s jazz. Titles include "To Whom It May Concern", "Right On", "This Night This Song", and "Allah Be Praised".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has two small cutout notches.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Return To Forever

No Mystery
Polydor, 1975. Very Good
Hard grooving work from the middle years of the Return To Forever group – featuring the line up with Chick Corea on keys, synths & percussion, Stanley Clarke on bass, organ and more, Lenny White on percussion and Al DiMeola on guitar. As you'd expect from this crew, this is some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chick Corea

My Spanish Heart
Polydor, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Given that Chick Corea first got his start working in the New York Latin scene back in the 60s, the album's a bit of a return to his roots – even if the general theme here is Spanish, and not Afro-Cuban! The Corea Spanish Heart here is cast in some darker, more contemplative tones than more ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Benson

Blue Benson
Verve/Polydor, 1968/1976. Very Good+
A sweet 70s collection of late 60s work from George Benson – tracks recorded in 1968 for Verve, originally from the albums Giblet Gravy and Goodies! The set list here really does a great job of picking out the best numbers – the kind of clean, lean tunes that were pushing Benson from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor (Germany), 1972. Near Mint-
An excellent non-US album from Stan Getz – and a real rarity too! Sammy Price with Lucky Thompson

Sammy Price Avec Lucky Thompson
Polydor (France), 1957. Very Good
A very unique session that features the often-modern tenor sax of Lucky Thompson in the company of bluesman Sammy Price, who plays piano and sings on a number of the tracks on the record. Amazingly, Thompson's raspy tenor tone is a perfect fit with the style of the recording – laying down ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Stitt with Rufus Harley & Robin Kenyatta

Deuces Wild
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
A great little Sonny Stitt album – very different than any of his other sets from the 60s! The album has a number of interesting aspects – from hard-wailing organ by Wilmer Mosby (who we think is Don Patterson under a fake name), to some screaming guest work by Rufus Harley and Robin ... Ronnie Laws

Classic Masters
Capitol, 1984. Very Good+
The best of Ronnie Laws' 70s material, plus a few new tracks as well – an album that definitely lives up to its Classic Masters title! The music is awash in both jazz and soul modes – jazz, thanks to Ronnie's well-played solos, which soar out in an amazing blend of new ideas and on-the- ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A really wonderful record from Michael White – a bit different than his earlier Impulse Records, but in a great way too – as White brings in a bit more of a soul vibe to his jazz work – using singer Myrna Matthews to really open up the tunes! The set's got a good electric vibe, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre

Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good+
Beautiful work from Jimmy Giuffre – and a key album in the development of his spare sound of the late 50s! The record features Jimmy on clarinet – as you'd guess by the title – but this is no hokey set of Benny Goodman or Buddy DeFranco-type tunes. Instead, Giuffre's using the ...
