Luis Bonfa Plays Great Songs

LP (Item 23318) Dot, Mid 60s — Condition: Sealed

Very easy-oriented material from Bonfa – with a mixture of arrangements by Deodato and Nick Perito. Perito's arrangements are actually the best here, as they have kind of a groovy 60s sound that works better with the material than Deodato's – which tend to be a bit too easy. Titles include "More", "Man & A Woman", "Bubala", "Exodus", "Moon River", and "Born Free".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Shrinkwrap has sticker remnants. Cover has a cutout hole.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Luiz Bonfa

Luiz Bonfa
Dot, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A pretty great little album from Bonfa – always one of the more corruptible bossa players, working here in a groovy set of pop arrangements by Deodato with a lively American twist! Some tunes are fast-driving bossa numbers with good jazz accompaniment, others have backing vocals in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Walter Wanderley

Return Of The Original
Canyon, Early 70s. Very Good+
A strange lost "comeback" album for Walter Wanderley – but a great one! The set was recorded recorded in the US in the early 70's, and with the same sweet electric sound that Wanderley was using on his last A&M/CTI albums! Walter plays organ and electric piano, and the group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66

Fool On The Hill
A&M, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of our favorite albums by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 – a perfect bridge between the simple pop of earlier records, and the group's expanding sound as the 70s approached! The warmly glowing Brasil 66 style is still very strongly in place, but the music here is all a bit hipper – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Azymuth

Flame
Milestone, 1984. Near Mint-
Warmly mellow grooves from Azymuth – a set that nicely lives up to the "Flame" in the title – and which shows the strengths the trio picked up during their years in the US! The sound here is round and soulful – a great fusion of the group's roots in the 70s Brazilian ... LP, Vinyl record album
Milestone, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
A classic batch of Bay Area Brazilian grooves – recorded in the sweet breezy electric style of the Fantasy studios, and featuring the vocals of the lovely Flora Purim in the lead! The session's got a great mix of Brazilian and American fusion players – including Airto (of course!), Ron ... LP, Vinyl record album
Somerset, Early 60s. Very Good+
Rizo was one of many American Latin pianists who tried to cash in on the bossa craze in the early 60s – but like so many others, his style is much more steeped in Latin playing, with a much heavier sound than some of the Brazilian keyboardists who were the true geniuses of bossa. Still not ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elis Regina

Elis Especial (1979)
Philips (Brazil), 1979. Near Mint-
One of the last records that Elis recorded for Polygram, and a great batch of tracks that has a lot more of a jazzy feel than some of her other albums from the time! The backing is by a small little combo with some great electric piano, and there's lots of nice percussive moments to keep things ... LP, Vinyl record album

Deodato

Whirlwinds
MCA, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's ... LP, Vinyl record album
