LP, Vinyl record album

One of Sergio Mendes' most electric outings from the 70s – a tasty mixture of LA fusion, Brazilian rhythms, and the group's unique twin female vocal lead! The mix of sounds is wonderful – and makes for a really solid album that shows how much soul Sergio had soaked up in the decade he'd spent in as part of the LA musical scene. There's still a strong Brazilian element to the record – thanks to musicians who include Oscar Castro Neves, Claudio Slon, Paulinho Da Costa, Hermeto Pascoal, and Raul De Souza – but most of the lyrics are in English, and the tunes themselves have a blend of R&B and fusion that's plenty sunny and plenty soulful! Titles include "It's So Obvious I Love You", "Sunny Day", "Emorio", "Cut That Out", "It's Up To You", and the tasty instrumental "Shakara". (Cover has a cutout hole.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Philips (Brazil), 1984. Very Good
A stone classic from the great Ivan Lins – a set recorded at a time when he was fast becoming a big name on the global scene, not just in Brazil – thanks to his wonderful sense of songwriting and lyricism! Stillness
A&M, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
A real classic from Sergio Mendes – probably most famous for its funky bits! Rita E Roberto (1985)
EMI (Brazil), 1985. Very Good+
Rita and Roberto are at it again – in another set of playful tunes that have definite new wave tendencies, and which are going for the sound of mid 80s America and England. Titles include "Molambo", "Souvenir", "Gloria F", "Nave Maria", "Novicas ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ye-Me-Le
A&M, 1969. Very Good+
Way past the hits, and into some really great territory – a move that makes the record one of our favorite Sergio Mendes sets for A&M! The sweeter bossa pop style here is undercut with a bit more influence from late 60s Brazilian grooves – some of the more baroque turns that Sergio' ... LP, Vinyl record album
Rita Lee (1979)
Som Livre (Brazil), 1979. Very Good+
A very weird record to peg – kind of half "rock n roll revival", in the mode of some of Lee's other 70s work, but also done with kind of a late 70s throwaway pop style. Most likely ironic and wishing it had a New York sense of irony to carry it through – and with tracks that ... LP, Vinyl record album

O Sorriso Do Jair
Philips (Brazil), 1966. Very Good
A cool 60s live set from Jair Rodrigues – one that captures his vocals with a raspy, earthy edge that's really great – mixed up here both in upbeat jazzy samba backings, and some folksier moments too! Urubu
Warner, 1976. Very Good
Brilliant 70s material by Antonio Carlos Jobim – one of his key sets from the middle part of the decade that had the composer really deepening his approach to both singing and songwriting – moving past some of the more instrumental modes that he was using at the start of the decade! ... Honeysuckle Rose – Aquarela Do Brasil
Polygram (Brazil), 1969. Near Mint-
A one of a kind record that still sparkles as brightly today as it did back in the late 60s – an amazing collaboration between Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina and Scandinavian jazzman Toots Thielemans – done in a style that easily makes it one of the best records ever from both artists! ... Epic, Early 60s. Near Mint-
One of the better early bossa albums by Bonfa, and one that doesn't have the sleepy quality that you find on some of his other records. Luiz' guitar is backed by a nice little combo, and the tracks have a lively rhythm, with occasional vocals, and some nice flute solos from time to time. The ... LP, Vinyl record album
