Incredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery

LP (Item 2322) Riverside, 1960 — Condition: Very Good
They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! The session lines Wes up with the very tight rhythm team of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all of whom lay back and mostly let Wes take center stage – sparkling on a number of original tunes that include "West Coast Blues", "Mister Walker", and "D Natural Blues". Other tracks include a great fast take on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin", plus "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Small blue label Bill Grauer Productions pressing with deep groove. NOTE – The bottom 2 inches of the cover has heavy wear, staining, peel spots, and split – but the rest is nice!)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Barry Harris

Listen To Barry Harris
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
One of the rarest Barry Harris albums – and an obscure solo session from 1961! Solo sessions were not that common at the time in the jazz industry, and it was even less common for a young player like Harris to get the chance to record the album. The record shows him in a lyrical complicated ... LP, Vinyl record album

(Mid 50s blue label Bill Grauer Productions pressing. Cover has some surface wear, aging, and splitting in the bottom seam.) LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, Late 50s. Very Good-
Sharp live set, recorded in Monk's best setting, The Five Spot, with Johnny Griffin, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and Roy Haynes. The material is classic comeback Monk – with those off-kilter piano lines in front, and Griffin's horn carving up angular spots around the rhythms. The group runs through ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Griffin

Little Giant
Riverside, 1959. Near Mint-
One of Johnny Griffin's hard blowing LPs as a leader for Jazzland – recorded with a crack lineup that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! This is the kind of work that the term "hard ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddy Redd

San Francisco Suite
Riverside, 1957. Near Mint-
Very different work than Freddie Redd's firey albums for Blue Note – a set of trio tunes that are distinctly modern, but done with a much more laidback approach. Freddie's style here has a bit of the late nite barroom feel – with some great blue notes and sadness stepping out from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Lewis

Jazz At Vespers
Riverside, 1954. Near Mint-
A great 50s session from trad revival clarinet genius George Lewis – recorded in a cathedral, which makes for wonderful sound – and featuring a group with Avery "Kid" Howard on trumpet, Jim Robinson on trombone, Alton Purnell on piano, Lawrence Marrero on banjo, Alcide "Sl ... Billy Taylor

Warming Up
Riverside, 1960. Very Good+
One of Billy's rarest sessions from the 60s – a trio set for Riverside, recorded in early 1960, and a great little session considering how obscure it is! The group's a trio, with Henry Grimes on bass and Ray Mosca on drums – supporting Billy's fluidly soulful work on the keys, over a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good+
One of the first truly important records from Don Cherry as a leader – and an amazingly well-crafted session that brings together ideas from his early years with Ornette, and expands them with some of the freedoms he was learning from the European scene! The record boasts a format and lineup ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Water Babies
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint-
A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! The set was recorded in 1967, but unissued until Miles late 70s time away from the ... LP, Vinyl record album
