Live At The Funky Quarters

LP (Item 2308) Fantasy, 1972 — Condition: Very Good

The Funky Quarters must have been a hell of a place – especially when Cal Tjader was bringing down the house with grooves this great! The record is one of Cal's best electric sides from the 70s – and it boasts some amazing work on Fender Rhodes from Al Zulaica – a player we only know from a handful of Tjader records, and who has an amazing way of snaking in soulfully alongside the vibes! The group is small and tight – really just bass, drums, and congas – leaving plenty of room for the Fender Rhodes and vibes to intermingle wonderfully! Titles include the classic groover "Leyte", plus "Soul Sauce III", "Philly Mambo", "Cubano Chant", and "Manteca".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has spliting on all seams, surface wear, and discoloration from age.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great live set recorded in 1962 with some of Cal's best players in the group – pianist Lonnie Hewitt and drummer John Rae, joined by bassist Freddie Schreiber. Verve, 1963. Very Good+
Excellent Verve album that Cal recorded with the great Clare Fischer on organ and piano. A real classic by Cal – one of the trademark albums of his time at Verve, and a unique blend of jazz, Latin, and other groovy influences! Fantasy, Late 60s. Near Mint-
An excellent album from legendary vibist Cal Tjader – and one of his truly electric albums! One of the last albums ever issued by the great Cannonball Adderley – and one of the most ambitious, too! Merl Saunders
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good
We have to admit we've always been somewhat dismissive of Merl Saunders 70s records, perhaps because of the hippy association we have with these bay area recordings. Fantasy, 1973. Near Mint-
A pretty sweet set of laid-back, mellow-grooving guitar funk tracks.
