Soul Meeting

LP (Item 23068) Atlantic, Early 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

✈
❔
Fairly decent jazz session, and one in which Ray plays alto sax and electric piano, along with his usual acoustic piano. Milt Jackson is on vibes, of course, and the rest of the group includes Kenny Burrell, Percy Heath, and Art Taylor. Titles include "Soul Meeting", "X Ray Blues", "Blue Genius", and "Bags Of Blues".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stere red and green label Rockefeller pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Art Ensemble Of Chicago

Bap-Tizum
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint-
A seminal moment for the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – one of their first albums for a widely-distributed label, and an exceptionally strong live performance that really gets to the core of the group's unique approach! The material was recorded at the Ann Arbor Festival in 1972 – and has ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jan Akkerman

Jan Akkerman Live
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint-
A late 70s live set from space jazz/jazz rock guitar guru Jan Akkerman – rolling from spacious, sparely haunting atmospherics to tighter, sax and keys punctuated fusion jams! This live set was his Atlantic followed up his self titled album, and it grooves in similar territory – not as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Robin Kenyatta

Stompin' At The Savoy
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A great blend of older jazz styles and the sweet 70s funk of Robin Kenyatta – served up with a hip sort of sparkle overall! There's a few familiar jazz modes in here that definitely live up to the spirit of the title – but most of the record is more open, laidback, and somewhat ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann & The Bill Evans Trio

Nirvana
Atlantic, 1961. Very Good+
A sweet set of tracks that goes way beyond the usual Herbie Mann album! Herbie's playing with Bill Evans' trio that included Chuck Israels on bass and Paul Motian on drums – and the group's got a nice groove that, while not exactly modal, still hits a nice open-ended stretch that works well ... Milt Jackson

Plenty, Plenty Soul
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good
Plenty plenty soul here – as Milt Jackson's moving away from the Modern Jazz Quartet, and working with a great group of players that really expand his sound! The session's a bit like some of Milt's soul jazz work for Riverside and other labels – in that it's got rhythms, timings, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les McCann

Comment
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good
A very hip record of vocal tracks – done in the same sort of spiritual soul style that Les introduced on Roberta Flack's first album, and which was also showing up on some of Donny Hathaway's work for Atlantic. While the record is not on of McCann's funkiest, it more than makes up for that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence Wheeler

New Chicago Blues
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint-
No blues at all – despite the title – and a great set of tracks that showcases the southside Chicago tenor roots of Clarence Wheeler! The album's a bit different than the first two Wheeler albums for Atlantic – in that the group's slightly bigger, and more 70s electric overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Passport

Hand Made
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+
The music's hand made, but the sound is heavily electric – thanks to some great production work that further pushes the spacier sound of the group! As with other Passport records, Klaus Doldinger's working here not just on saxes (which are great), but also on moog, electric piano, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Luc Ponty

Live
Atlantic, 1979. Near Mint-
The mighty Jean Luc Ponty in all his 70s glory – taking the violin from the realm of more staid European jazz roots, and using it to rival some of the bigger fusion soloists of the decade! Ponty's key here is the way he uses the electrified instrument almost like a keyboard – spinning ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Gula Matari
A&M, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
A real step forward for Quincy Jones – a record that really shows the jazzman moving into sophisticated new territory – a sound that's just right for the CTI generation! The album's got a vibe that's a bit similar to Quincy's Walking In Space album, but it's a lot deeper too – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bennie Maupin

Moonscapes
Mercury, 1978. Near Mint-
A really great solo set from the great Bennie Maupin – part of an excellent run of records as a leader, cut during the stretch when he was riding to great fame with The Headhunters! The vibe here is deeper and more spiritual than his work with that group – still somewhat influenced by ... LP, Vinyl record album
