Funky magic from maestro Johnny Pate – a record that's very much in the same spirit as his blacksploitation soundtracks for Shaft In Africa or Brother On The Run! The style here is quite similar – full orchestrations, scored by Johnny with an all-soul feel – and played by a crack lineup of jazz and soul instrumentalists – including Richard Tee on organ, Bernard Purdie on drums, Montego Joe on congas, Jerome Richardson on flute, and Cornell Dupree and Joe Beck on guitars! The guitars really rip back and forth nicely in the set – searing one minute, choppy the next – and sometimes as much a part of the rhythms as the bass, drums, and percussion! Pate also draws a bit on his earlier years in jazz – using Richardson's flute to bring some Lalo Schifrin-like sensitivity to some tracks, and some Roland Kirk-like soul to a few others – working in a depth of sound that's way more than just straight jazz or instrumental soul. All titles are originals by Johnny, who also arranged and produced the set – and tracks include "No Hangups", "Sangria", "Bound To Happen", "That Ain't Too Cool", "Totally Unexpected", "You're Starting Too Fast", "Frustrating Disappointment", and "Constant Wind". Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.
The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:
If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
