Sound Of Mann

LP (Item 22973) Verve, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
Herbie hits some nice Afro-Cuban grooves, with backing by Latin percussionists like Ray Barretto, Ray Mantilla, Jose Mangual, and Patato Valdez. The set's a lively one, in the manner of his Flautista album, with some tracks that are a bit longer than usual, with a nice heavy groove. Titles include "Baia", "The Amazon River", "Frenesi", and a long Latin version of "Autumn Leaves".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(German stereo pressing. Cover has light edge wear, light ring impression.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Herbie Mann

Reggae
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A surprisingly strong mix of 70s modes happening here – as the funky flute of Herbie Mann takes on some of the nascent reggae grooves of the time – with results that are a lot nicer than you might expect! There's some core rhythms on the record from Tommy McCook, but Herbie's regular ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1957. Near Mint-
Different work than usual for Herbie – a series of sides recorded in Sweden in the late 50s, featuring Herbie on both flute and tenor! The feel here is at once more poised and more open than some of Herbie's US sides from the time – as the groups shift from track to track, and Herbie's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1965. Near Mint-
A surprisingly great album from Herbie Mann – especially considering that it's based around a Broadway score! The set goes way beyond the source of the tunes, though – and Herbie's combo makes some great groovy magic out of the music – often with some sweet Latin touches, as you'd ... LP, Vinyl record album

Right Now
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good+
LP...$9.99 14.99
Another great groover from Herbie's Latin days! The band has a very unusual modal sound, with Herbie's flute next to vibes by Hagood Hardy, guitar by Billy Bean, and percussion by Willie Bobo & Patato Valdes. Includes a nice version of "O Barquino", plus the cuts "Cool ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann

Push Push
Embryo, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Herbie Mann's biggest albums – and one of his funkiest too! The cover's a bit of an off-putter – although it probably helped sell the record, back in the day – but the grooves are as rock-solid as anything that Herbie cut at the time – tight, focused, and a perfect ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Herbie Mann's at the Village Gate – really wailing away in a set of extended numbers that not only set a whole new standard for live recording in jazz, but which also pushed forward the role of the flute in the music as well! There's a heck of a lot of soul in the grooves here – served ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie & Stuff Smith

Dizzy Gillespie & Stuff Smith
Verve, Mid 50s. Good
Diz meets the great jazz violinist in one of his few sets for Verve from the 50's. Wynton Kelly's on piano, and the groove is pretty laid-back, with the nice sort of long swing-oriented tracks that you'd find on some of the best Verve sessions from the time. Cuts include "Rio Pakistan", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd

Jazz Samba
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ben Webster

Soulville
Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good
About as classic as you can get for Ben Webster on Verve Records – a nicely mature, nicely laidback session that really captures the energy promised in the title! The sidemen are all in an easygoing, soulful mode – Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy In Greece
Verve, 1956. Very Good
Dizzy's in Greece, looking very cool in a fez on the cover – and really wailing hard with a larger group that includes Billy Mitchell, Charlie Persip, Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly, and Phil Woods! The mode here is still quite boppish, despite the larger size of the ensemble – but Dizzy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1955. Very Good
Count Basie taken down a few notches – not in quality, but in terms of the size of the group – as Oscar really opens up some of the Count's standards in a whole new way, by playing them with a stripped-down quartet that features Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on ...
