Step 1

LP (Item 22906) Solid State, Late 60s — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
A pretty darn lively session from Jimmy, and one that features a tight combo that includes Larry Frazier on guitar and Fats Theus on tenor. The group grooves on some nice long tracks (longer than most of Jimmy's other Solid State session), with a tight rolling soul jazz groove that brings up the best sound of Prestige in the 60s. Tracks include "Step One", "Motoring Along", and "South Wes".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jimmy McGriff

At The Apollo
Sue, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A classic live set by McGriff – freer than some of his other singles for Sue, with an open-ended quality that really lets him do his thang! His group includes Larry "The Lar With The Flair" Frazier on guitar – a semi-mad talent from Chicago, inspired by George Freeman, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy McGriff

Black & Blues
Groove Merchant, 1971. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
An unusual little album for Jimmy McGriff – released during his funkier years at the Groove Merchant label, but with a gritty sort of sound that takes us back to his first few records on Sue in the 60s! The "blues" in the title is definitely well-chosen – as the tracks here ... LP, Vinyl record album

Manny Albam

Soul Of The City
Solid State, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
A wonderful little session from Manny Albam – one that continues the strong tradition of larger group jazz arranging he began in the 60s, but which takes it to an even deeper level! Manny composed the entire set as kind of a "city suite" in jazz – one that paints the picture ... LP, Vinyl record album

Randy Brecker

Score
Solid State, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A very cool early Randy Brecker album – recorded years before he was working in tighter, R&B-inflected styles – and was instead an up-and-coming player with a surprisingly sharp edge! The set's produced by Duke Pearson, and has a groovy sound that's similar to Blue Note dates of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

One
CTI, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! Cannonball Adderley

Music You All
Capitol, 1971. Near Mint-
Killer work from the same sessions that gave the world Cannonball Adderley's classic Black Messiah album – live material from an extended stretch as the Troubadour club in LA – featuring a very righteous, freewheeling version of Cannonball's group! Richard Groove Holmes

Living Soul
Prestige, 1966. Good
Tight trio material from the legendary Richard Groove Holmes – caught live at Count Basie's Nightclub in Harlem, working hard and heavy with a trio that features Gene Edwards on guitar and George Randall on drums! Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto

Getz Au Go Go
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
A beautiful dreamy album that's quite different from the classic Getz/Gilberto collaboration – but which also shares much of that set's lyrical beauty! This album was recorded live, in 1964, when Stan Getz was playing with his quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes – an incredible ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

Getz/Gilberto #2
Verve, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Reflections
Verve, 1963. Near Mint-
A lost chapter in the Stan Getz sound of the 60s – an album that features Stan blowing in front of some beautiful backdrops set by Lalo Schifrin and Claus Ogerman! The sound is super mellow – dreamy, but never sleepy – with Stan blowing in these soulful, magical, exploratory ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1960s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A really great testament to the wide warmth and many talents of Cannonball Adderley – as well as a portrait of just how much he'd touched the world of jazz in the short time he was on the planet! The set brings together collaborations between Cannon and a variety of artists – pulled ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les Baxter

Caribbean Moonlight
Capitol, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
Not as all-out exotic as some of Les' earlier Capitol albums, but still pretty darn great! The theme here is Caribbean exotic, and the rhythms have a little bit more of Cuba and Haiti than they do of primitive Borneo. Les handles them nicely, as always, and contributes some wonderful arrangements ... LP, Vinyl record album
