❔

Although Buddy's always been a bit laughable, he was always trying to keep his bag moving, and his band of the late 60s included some pretty darn nice players. The group on this session includes Ernie Watts and Bobby Shew, and the band wails hard and fast in a live setting with lots of tight little numbers. Tracks include "Wack Wack", "Norwegian Wood", "The Beat Goes On", and "Mexicali Nose".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1956. Near Mint-
A lively little set done strongly in a Basie mode – as you might guess from the title! Buddy's on drums, but the real maestro here is Marty Paich – who handled the arrangements, and most likely brought together the batch of west coast jazzers who inhabit the group – including ... Buddy Rich

New One!
Pacific Jazz, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very hard-burning work from Buddy's hip band of the mid 60s – a large ensemble, but one that features searing horn parts that cut through the bigger arrangements with ease! Pacific Jazz, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
A hard and heavy side from Buddy, and true to his reputation and the title of the LP, he comes out swinging! The set features a top notch mid 60s group, and from the sound of the numbers on this set, ol' Buddy did need to hand out any of his famous lectures on the bus afterwards, with some crisp ... Carmell Jones

Remarkable Carmell Jones
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Very Good+
Remarkable Carmell Jones, indeed – and one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by this up-and-coming force on the LA scene at the start of the 60s! Jones was a player who really showcased something new on the west at the time – a move away from cool jazz, and the start of a deeper, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bud Shank with Joao Donato

Bud Shank & His Brazilian Friends
Pacific Jazz, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Bud Shank's icy alto has been credited as one of the prime influences on the bossa movement in Brazil (partly because of his early 50's recordings with guitarist Laurindo Almeida), and this beautiful set brings him into play with a trio of Brazilian musicians that includes Joao Donato on piano. ... Bill Perkins On Stage
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Near Mint-
A beautiful album of crispy cool jazz from the LA scene of the 50s – one that features the octet of Bill Perkins recorded live in Hollywood, but in a "special hi-fi theater recording" that has sound as sublime as his studio work! On Time
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Near Mint-

Red Mitchell

Rejoice!
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Near Mint-
Brilliant work from one of the most important forces on the LA scene of the 50s – and one of the few early albums Red Mitchell cut under his own name! They certainly got the title right on this one – as Feldman moves from his usual staid jazz mode, to come up with a very groovy LP! Earl Anderza

Outa Sight
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Near Mint-
A lost treasure from the glory days of the LA soul jazz bop scene of the early 60s! Alto player Earl Anderza has this crazy tone that's unlike anything we've ever heard – and he plays with a calculated approach to atonality that hints at later work by Ayler and others – but which comes ...
