Diverse Yusef Lateef

LP (Item 22828) Atlantic, 1970 — Condition: Very Good

One of the best of Yusef's Atlantic recordings, and one that offers a mix of his 2 different sides – his older spiritualist one, and his newer funkier one. Includes the tight groover "Live Humble", with nice conga work by Ray Barretto, plus the extended "Chandra" and "A Long Time Ago", both with nice exotic flute work by Yusef, and a weird mix of instruments, in the tradition of his older Savoy sessions.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Red & green Broadway label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Yusef's Bag
Prestige, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of those two-fers pulled from Prestige sides during the 70s, this one combining music from several different recordings featuring Yusef Lateef. The first LP of the set was originally issued as Soulnik under leader Doug Watkins' name. Although Watkins was one heck of a hardbop bassist in his ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

Dreamer (BYG pressing)
BYG (France), Late 50s/Early 70s. Very Good+
French repackaging of one of Yusef's fantastic LPs for the Savoy label – featuring the great multi-reed player amidst a tight quintet of Detroit players like Terry Pollard, Bernard McKinney, and Frank Gant. Clear evidence that the Detroit spiritual jazz scene stretched back way before the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don Cherry

Hear & Now
Atlantic, 1977. Very Good+
Important 70s work from Don Cherry – one of the first albums to bring his overseas experiments to a larger US audience! The set builds nicely off of styles that Don forged earlier in France and Scandinavia – a freer style of music than his work with Ornette Coleman, and a richly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie continues the funky groove begun on Instant Funk, and smoothed out over albums like I Need Some Money – and although jazz fans probably gave him hell for going this way, we think this is actually a pretty darn great album! Eddie Harris

Excursions
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A super-long batch of messed-up funky jazz from Eddie Harris! Elvin Jones

Midnight Walk
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
One of Elvin Jones' greatest records – a set that's quite different from both his work in the John Coltrane Quartet, and some of the powerhouse jazz sides he'd cut later as a solo act! The vibe here is a bit hard to describe, but it somehow comes together in the "midnight walk" of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jay McShann

Big Apple Bash
Atlantic, 1979. Near Mint-
A much groovier record than you might expect – hardly the older-styled jazz session normally associated with Jay McShann, and more of a wide-ranging session that brings in some great contemporary touches! The album's something of a celebration for Jay – and it features wonderful guest ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mann & A Woman
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good
A really unique collaboration between fluteman Herbie Mann and soul singer Tamiko Jones – a vocalist who's always a really special talent, and who has an equally great ear for jazz as well! That style works perfectly here – as the vibe is somewhere between Herbie's Latin and Brazilian-s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Luc Ponty

Aurora
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good
One of the hippest of Jean Luc Ponty's mainstream efforts from the 70s – a tightly jamming album that's made even better by plenty of keyboards from Patrice Rushen! Rushen's sound really brings a warmer, more soulful groove to the record – stretching out with flowing solos that remind ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great album recorded in 1963 for Atlantic – one of our favorite ever! A rare session of violin-led jazz – recorded for Atlantic Records in 1960!
