LP, Vinyl record album

A million-seller, but also a record that no home should be without – and easily one of THE greatest keyboard albums of the 70s! The album's the one that features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". (Cover has a cutout hole & light wear.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

MCA, 1975. Very Good+
Key proof that Deodato kept on making great records after leaving CTI Records – and in a way, the kind of set that allowed him a bit more freedom to grow than some of his contemporaries! The vibe here is a bit tighter than before, but in a way that makes many numbers even funkier – ... LP, Vinyl record album

CTI, 1973. Very Good- Gatefold
Funky keyboards galore – and one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – ... CTI, 1977. Sealed Gatefold
A rare CTI entry from funky flute master Jeremy Steig – a musician whose style is a great fit for the label! There's more of an electric vibe here than on Steig's earlier records – but that creates a nice current of soul that really helps things take off in a nicely different way. The ... CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! CTI, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
Proof that Milt Jackson was easily the hippest member of the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one of the few who could really open up into different sounds away from that combo! This sweet 70s set for CTI is totally great – a whole new chapter for Jackson's vibes, and a real re-setting of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bad Benson
CTI, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy ... CTI, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
Moody, moody stuff from Ron – who's really opening up his scope on this album, one cut during his strong emergence as an arranger/composer with a bent for pushing the bass way past its traditional jazz role. CTI, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
An amazing album from Stanley Turrentine – quite different than most of his other sessions for CTI, but in a really great way! CTI/Salvation, 1982. Sealed
An unusual CTI side project – a set of recordings that have a slightly spiritual bent, although still done with a vibe that's strongly CTI! Nina Simone sings "Balm In Gilead" and "If You Pray Right", Stanley Turrentine does "I Told Jesus", and Hubert Laws plays ... LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful work from Randy Weston – and a unique electric session from the 70s! CTI, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great early CTI session by George Benson, and one of the most stripped-down, straight-ahead funky records he did for the label! There's a sharpness here that's different than the larger feel of some of Benson 's later records – a sound that almost links back to his soul jazz roots in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
