Out To Lunch

LP (Item 2249) Blue Note, 1964 — Condition: Sealed
Also available
Eric Dolphy — Out To Lunch (180 gram pressing) ... LP 25.99
One of Eric Dolphy's lasting classics – and possibly the ultimate album of "new thing" jazz from the mid 60s! The record's got an even sharper edge than previous Dolphy recordings for Prestige – a really unique combination of instrumentation that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – plus Dolphy on alto sax, flute, and bass clarinet. Although Dolphy's reed playing is as amazing as you'd expect, the real surprise here is Hutcherson, whose vibes ring out with this cold harsh tone that give a perfect edge to the set – bold and metallic, quite different than any work on vibes from previous players. Despite a large number of later recordings, Hutcherson almost never hit this sound again – except perhaps on a few Jackie McLean recordings – and it's his playing that gives the set such a unique sound. Titles include "Straight Up & Down", "Gazzelloni", "Hat & Bread", "Out To Lunch" and "Something Sweet Something Tender".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(180 gram pressing – part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series. Remastered from the original tapes by Kevin Gray!)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Classic set of European recordings – made by Dolphy in 1961, before the fateful 1964 European tour that would later claim his life. Duke Pearson

How Insensitive
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+
Another bold step forward in the too-short career of Duke Pearson – and one of the last few records before his untimely death! Earl Klugh

Finger Paintings
Blue Note, 1977. Near Mint-
A real breakout album for Earl Klugh – the kind of record that got him on the a-list of fusion players for the rest of the 70s! The title here is especially well-chosen – as the tunes have a gently colorful feel that's never too slick, despite the tighter setting of the album – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
A real watershed album from Horace Silver – a record that has him stepping strongly into the 70s – but with a rich new groove that's different both from his 60s work, and from the heavy politics of his United States series too! Donald Byrd

Electric Byrd
Blue Note, 1970. Sealed
Donald Byrd in a sweet electric mode – as you'd guess from the title! Blue Note, 1959. Very Good

Donald Byrd

Street Lady
Blue Note, 1973. Very Good Gatefold

Gerald Wilson

California Soul
World Pacific, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A very hip set of arrangements by LA bandleader Gerald Wilson – and one that takes his soul jazz stylings of earlier albums, and gives them a bit more of a late 60s funky sound. The band's pretty darn hip, and includes players like Anthony Ortega, Hadley Caliman, and Bobby Bryant – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
