Sidney Bechet Jazz Classics Vol 2

LP (Item 22013) Blue Note, Mid 40s/Late 50s — Condition: Very Good+
Blue Note LP that compiles a bunch of Sidney Bechet's classic 78rpm sides for the label – most of which were recorded during the mid 40s, in a variety of different settings. Titles include "Up In Sidney's Flat", "High Society", "Jackass Blues", "Old Stack O'Lee Blues", "St Louis Blues", "Lord Let Me In The Lifeboat", "Pounding Heart Blues", "Changes Made", "Jazz Me Blues" and "Blues For Tommy Ladiner".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lou Donaldson

Blues Walk
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good
A pivotal album in the career of saxophonist Lou Donaldson – a set that really has him finding his own groove – a slow-stepping, soul-drenched mode that's a nice change from the bop of his roots! A key part of the record's charm is conga work by Ray Barretto – a player used often ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Off To The Races
Blue Note, 1958. Sealed
Donald's off to the races on this one – grooving with a lean, mean sound that makes the record one of his hardest-hitting and most soulful blue note sessions of the 50s! The group features Byrd's frequent bandmate Pepper Adams on baritone sax – blowing always with a style that's a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Tokyo Blues
Blue Note, 1962. Very Good+
One of Horace Silver's greatest records ever – and the album that always makes us remember how many of his tunes are now etched in the memory of modern jazz! The album's got a slightly exotic bent that you might guess from the title – a furthering of the sound that Silver first started ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Blue Note 2-fer that brings together some of Gil Evans' great modernist jazz pieces for the World Pacific label. Grant Green

Green Is Beautiful
Blue Note, 1970. Near Mint-
A funky nugget from the second Blue Note chapter of guitarist Grant Green – that wonderful point when he shifted into more funk-based styles from his hardbop work at the start – and found a way to unlock a whole new side of his talents! The approach here is similar to some of the funky ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, Late 50s. Near Mint-
A wonderfully hard-storming set – and a record that not only firmly put the Jazz Messengers on the map, but also set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The group here is the early version of the Messengers – almost co-led by drummer Art Blakey with pianist Horace Silver ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Donald Byrd's Best
Blue Note, Early 70s/1975. Near Mint-
A tasty collection of goodies that Donald recorded with the great Larry Mizell during the early 70s. Certainly not his all-inclusive best, but some of our favorite material by this legendary soul jazz trumpeter. The tracks have a sparkling electric jazz funk sound, with amazing production that ... Cecil Taylor

Unit Structures
Blue Note, 1966. Good
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists ... LP, Vinyl record album
