Blue Train

LP (Item 21907) Blue Note, 1957 — Condition: Very Good+
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really cooking at full strength! The groove here is a bit harder, heavier, and hardbop-inflected than some of Trane's late 50s sides with Red Garland – thanks to a lineup that features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's a crisp modern edge to the record that really holds up beautifully – even after years of play – and titles include "Blue Train, "Locomotion", "Moment's Notice", and "Lazy Bird".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono 200 gram Classic Records Quiex II pressing. Vinyl plays with a short click on "Locomotion". Cover is great!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, 1957. Near Mint-
A beautiful album that more than lives up to its evocative title – an early session from John Coltrane, filled with long tracks that slide along brilliantly! As with many other classic Prestige albums from Trane, backing is by the trio of Red Garland piano, Paul Chambers bass, and Art Taylor ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impassioned Tenor-Man
Alto, Early 60s. Very Good+
There's not much in the way of notes on the cover, but the album feels like prime early 60s work from the Coltrane quartet – long tracks with bold solos – and titles that include "Cousin Mary", "Body & Soul", "Interpretations", and "March 2nd On ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint-

Coltrane caught live in Paris on two days in July, 1965, with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. The set includes two takes on "Impressions", one more out than the other, plus "Blue Valse", "Afro Blue", and "Naima". Good live stuff that shows a ... LP, Vinyl record album

His Greatest Years Vol 3
Impulse, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A 2 LP retrospective of some of the more spiritual exploratory sides 'Trane was cutting in the mid to late '60's for Impulse. A number of cuts feature the classic quartet with Jimmy Garrison, McCoy Tyner & Elvin Jones, but a few feature some of the later lineups with Pharoah Sanders, Reggie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kulu Se Mama
Impulse, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of our favorite albums ever from John Coltrane – but a record that's sometimes eclipsed by the genius of A Love Supreme! The feel here is very similar to that one – long tracks that introduce a new mode of searching, spiritual jazz for the 60s – one that's performed by a core ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lush Life
Prestige, 1957/1958. Near Mint-
A beautiful little album from the young John Coltrane, and one that hides its strong sense of depth behind a familiar jazz standard used as a title! In some way, the record is almost experimental for the time – as side one features the tenor of Coltrane alongside just the bass of Earl May ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love Supreme
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Coltrane Jazz
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good-
The title may be a simple one, but the record really marks a key point in John Coltrane's development – an embrace of the newer freedoms allowed to him at Atlantic Records, but in a way that's a bit more subtle than some of his other work for the label! At one level, the record moves at the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Donaldson

Lou Takes Off
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
Quite an unusual Lou Donaldson album for Blue Note – much more open-ended than his other sets, with a really hard-jamming sort of sound! Unlike some of Donaldson's tighter dates of the time, which feature more bop-based, song-based shorter tunes – this one's more of a long-form blowing ... LP, Vinyl record album
