Jimmy & Wes – The Dynamic Duo

LP (Item 2184) Verve, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
A really wonderful album in the Verve Records catalog of the 60s – a set that's not only a fantastic meeting between two superstar jazz musicians, with Jimmy Smith on Hammond and Wes Montgomery on guitar – but one that also takes things in a whole groovy new dimension, thanks to the arrangements of Oliver Nelson! Nelson is at his soulful best here – working on hard-swinging charts that almost seem to liberate Jimmy and Wes to do even more with their solos – really stretching out, with an especially great sound from Smith on the organ – maybe at a level that makes the record one of his best of all time for Verve! Titles include "James & Wes", "Night Train", "13 (Death March)", and "Down By The Riverside".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Later MGM stereo pressing. Cover has some wear & staining along the spine, cut corner.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gil Melle

Tome VI
Verve, 1967. Near Mint-
An amazing little album from the legendary Gil Melle – a set that's billed as the first album of "electronic jazz", and which features Gil working with his Jazz Electronauts combo! Although Melle's perhaps best known for his baritone sax modern sides of the 50s for Blue Note and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good
An incredibly haunting session that has Stan's edgey alto fronting some of Russ Garcia's arch-modernist string arrangements – similar to those that he contributed to other Verve albums of the same style. Getz maintains a wonderfully breathy tone that floats above the orchestrations, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Meade Lux Lewis

Yancey's Last Ride
Verve/Down Home, Late 50s. Very Good
Tracks include "Spooney Sam", "Mama's Bounce", "Shooboody", "Hangover Boogie", "Yancey's Last Ride", and "Bush Street Blues". Nice David Stone Martin cover too! LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
Ostensibly simple stuff from Bill Evans, but pretty darn great – and a nice move into a more sophisticated vein than his earlier recordings! The album has him working with bassist Eddie Gomez, a hugely talented bassist that would be one of Bill's best partners during this period, and a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

Gillespie Jam Sessions
Verve, 1953/1954. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Dizzy really shone in settings like this – working with some of his most able peers, running easily through bop and swing material, and never making a single player feel unwelcome as he outblew them all! The 2LP set features the tune "Jam Blues", recorded in 1953 with a group that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfa

Jazz Samba Encore!
Verve, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
Hardly an "encore" of the first Stan Getz Jazz Samba album – as this set's got a slightly different feel, and lots of great elements that make it really unique! This time around, Brazilian musician Luiz Bonfa is on guitar – already a skilled proponent of the bossa by the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich

Drum Battle At JATP
Verve, 1952. Very Good+
A pretty darn great album – with a wonderful mix of JATP swing and strong-handed drumming by the leaders. The material was mostly recorded at a Jazz At The Philharmonic show at Carnegie Hall in 1952, and although the main focus appears to be Krupa and Rich's drum work, there's actually some ... Johnny Hodges

Castle Rock
Verve/Norgran, 1952. Very Good+
An undisputed Verve classic, and proof that Johnny Hodges could make damn good records away from Duke Ellington! The set features a number of small groupings of Ellington players – like Al Sears, Billy Strayhorn, Lawrence Brown, and others – but the sound is quite different than with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1963. Near Mint-
A real cooker of a set – and one that features Wynton's piano over some great larger backings from Claus Ogerman! The style of the set is really wonderful – as Wynton plays with a core smaller group that includes Kenny Burrell on guitar, plus regulars Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1959. Near Mint-
A late songbook entry for Oscar Peterson, and a great one too – a record that really has Peterson setting fire to a host of classic Jerome Kern compositions, in his legendary trio with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums! Thigpen's unique rhythmic conception brings a lot to the record ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey

Thermo
Milestone, Early 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A nice little 2LP set that brings together some great work from Art's non Blue Note years during the 60s, recorded for the Riverside label, and originally issued on the albums Ugetsu, Kyoto, and Caravan. The set features all the tracks from Ugetsu, plus selections from the other two – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond

1975 – The Duets
A&M, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent mid 70s duet jazz from pianist Dave Brubeck & alto Paul Desmond! Duets 1975 is a nicely laidback work from the duo – playing here with no other accompaniment, in a spare set of material that's incredibly fragile and intimate – and all the better for that. The move is a ... LP, Vinyl record album
