2 sets of classic live soul jazz material from the group that invented the genre! Cannonball's caught live in 2 settings, one per disc – live at the Jazz Workshop in 1959, with Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, and brother Nat; and again at the Village Vanguard in 1962, again with brother Nat and Sam Jones, plus Yusef Lateef, and Joe Zawinul. Titles include "This Here", "You Got It", "High Fly", "Scotch & Water", "Dizzy's Business", "Gemini", and "Planet Earth". Classic material – and even though this 2LP set brings together 2 older albums, it's got some nice notes, and both of those records are kind of tough to find! (Cover has a promo stamp.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

EmArcy, 1956. Near Mint-
The title's a bit of a mouthful, but a good description of the way Cannonball was presented in the years before his soul jazz groove firmly kicked in! The "hi fi" is a bit overstated – as the album's pretty much of a straight jazz record, featuring Cannon blowing lead solos in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!
Capitol, 1966. Very Good+
If the 60's ever had a "hit" jazz record, it was probably this one! The album's a sparkling live session featuring the trademark soul jazz sounds of the Cannonball Adderley group with Joe Zawinul on acoustic and electric piano, and brother Nat Adderley on cornet. Somethin' Else
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing in a cool tone that's a perfect ... Cannonball Enroute
Mercury, Late 50s. Very Good+
Cannonball Adderley's enroute to a great jazz legacy here – stepping out in a groove that begins to show some of the soul jazz modes he was forging at the end of the 50s – a great change from the straighter bop styles of his early years! The lineup here is a wonderful early expression ... LP, Vinyl record album

Workin' Out!
Prestige, 1965. Very Good
A killer album of soul jazz tracks that pairs together two of Prestige's best players! The firey Bobby Timmons is at the height of his career here – cutting long drawn-out piano grooves that are among some of the best of his young years. Lytle's always a killer – and his funky vibes ... LP, Vinyl record album
