LP, Vinyl record album

2 sets of classic live soul jazz material from the group that invented the genre! Cannonball's caught live in 2 settings, one per disc – live at the Jazz Workshop in 1959, with Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, and brother Nat; and again at the Village Vanguard in 1962, again with brother Nat and Sam Jones, plus Yusef Lateef, and Joe Zawinul. Titles include "This Here", "You Got It", "High Fly", "Scotch & Water", "Dizzy's Business", "Gemini", and "Planet Earth". Classic material – and even though this 2LP set brings together 2 older albums, it's got some nice notes, and both of those records are kind of tough to find! (Cover has a light stain on the bottom right corner.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cannonball Takes Charge
Riverside, 1959. Very Good-
A hardbop classic from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his harder to find albums from the Riverside days! The set has Cannon playing without his usual group, in the context of an all-star batch of players that includes Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb – who he worked with ... Them Dirty Blues
Riverside, 1960. Good+
One of the all-time great ones by Cannonball! This record captures him in the prime of his early soul jazz fame – working with an unbelievably heavy quintet that featured Bobby Timmons on piano (with Barry Harris sitting in on a few tracks), Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and ... Accent On Africa
Capitol, 1968. Very Good+
Wickedly hip work from Cannonball Adderley – and one of his real standout sessions for Capitol Records in the 60s! The set lives up to its "Africa" promise right from the very first note – and features a set of loud, proud tunes that really bring out the righteous sounds of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Planet Earth
Riverside/ABC, Early 60s/1969. Very Good-
Excellent early 60s work by Cannonball Adderley – retitled here for release in the late 60s, but with a rock-solid soul jazz sound all the way through! The album features Cannon's sextet with Yusef Lateef and Joe Zawinul – and they're playing a number of Lateef compositions that have ... LP, Vinyl record album
African Waltz
Riverside, 1961. Very Good-
Pretty darn hip stuff – and with some great soloing by Cannonball! Somethin' Else
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good
A landmark album – even if it was the only session that Cannonball Adderley ever cut for Blue Note! Lush Side Of Cannonball
EmArcy, Late 50s. Very Good
A wonderfully mellow set of ballads recorded by Cannonball, with orchestral backings by Richard Hayman. The album's typical of the kind of "all over the map" approach that Mercury used during Cannon's early years – before he'd settled down into the one-man soul jazz factory he ... Drum Song
Galaxy/Milestone, 1978. Sealed
Not as full on and bombastic as some of Philly Joe Jones heavy thunder recordings from the late 50s – but two nice albums recorded during one set of sessions for Galaxy Records at the end of the 70s! The quality of the material here is high – as Jones is working here with sidemen that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Music For Violin & Jazz Quartet
Jam, 1980. Very Good
Urbaniak's joined by Roy Haynes, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams and Ted Dunbar in the New York Five, playing a more straight set than some of the fusion sides he's more well known for. The group's infused with a nice soul jazz sensibility to the mostly boppish numbers, including a couple of numbers ... LP, Vinyl record album
Young Byrd (10 To 4 At The 5 Spot/Gigi Gryce & The Jazz Lab)
Milestone, Late 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Milestone reissue that brings together 2 late 50's sessions by Donald Byrd! 10 To 4 At The 5 Spot was one of Byrd's partnerships with Pepper Adams – and is tremendous work from saxophonist Pepper – quite possibly one of his most hard-blowing sets on record! The album's a live date, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Juicy Lucy
Beehive, 1979. Sealed
A great return to form for guitarist Sal Salvador – a player who didn't always get that much time in the spotlight in the 70s, until a big wave of fresh exposure from the Beehive label! Sal got his start in the Stan Kenton group, where he learned a great sense of color and phrasing – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Black Miracle
Milestone, 1976. Very Good
Not Joe's most cutting-edge album, but a sweet warm batch of tracks with a good California/Fantasy records feel!
