Jewels Of Thought

LP (Item 2173) Impulse, 1969 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

A wonderful reunion of Pharoah Sanders and vocalist Leon Thomas – and a set that captures a lot of the same energy as the pair's previous record – Karma! Thomas' vocals are in wonderful form for the set – stretching out soulfully on the extended classic "Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah" – a title that has much of the same grace and power as "The Creator Has A Master Plan. The rest of the players on the date include Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Richard Davis and Cecil McBee on basses, and Idris Muhammad and Roy Haynes on drums – and unusually enough, each of the double bassists and drummers gets their own channel of sound to work with! The other long track on the album is the extended "Sun In Aquarius" – which is a bit more outside, but still pretty great!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Rainbow label stereo pressing. Cover has initials in marker, a sticker spot, light wear, and a small split on the bottom seam.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Keith Jarrett

Shades
ABC/Impulse, 1976. Near Mint-
A lost gem from Keith's "with horns" period – a quintet session from the mid 70s, recorded with a group that features Dewey Redman on tenor, plus Charlie Haden on bass, Paul Motian on drums and percussion, and Guilherme Franco on additional percussion. The feel is a bit straighter ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

Best Of Gabor Szabo
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A record that's every bit as beautiful and striking as its cover – a cool collection of all the wonderful guitar-driven grooves that guitarist Gabor Szabo created for Impulse Records in the 60s! Szabo first rose to fame working with Chico Hamilton – but soon established himself as one ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse/Analogue Productions, 1962. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A beautiful record – but that's no surprise, since most of the later work of Coleman Hawkins tends to be great! The setting is quite laidback – and Hawkins' time-weathered tenor is placed in a perfect setting with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Major Holley on bass, and Eddie Locke on drums. ... Impulse, 1965. Very Good
A tremendous little album from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA! The album has a crackling sense of energy that more than lives up to the exclamation point in the title – a starker quality ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1975. Very Good+

Gil Evans

Out Of The Cool
Impulse, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold
A pivotal session for Gil Evans – one that brought his genius to the American public strongly and successfully, without the help of Miles Davis! Miles Davis

Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! Eddie Harris

Excursions
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
A super-long batch of messed-up funky jazz from Eddie Harris! The record's got Eddie working all aspects of the electric sax – in a similar style to some of his other work on the best Atlantic albums of the 70s (like Instant Death of Plug It In) – and the group features a shifting cast ... Blue Note, 1955/1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
This is the great Blue Note two-fer from the 70's that combines two rare Cecil Taylor albums from the 50's – one recorded for the Transition label, one for United Artists. First up is Jazz Advance – one of the best pre-1960 sessions by Cecil Taylor, recorded in Boston in 1956, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz Crusaders

Stretchin' Out
Pacific Jazz, 1964. Very Good+
The Jazz Crusaders at their early best – swinging hard, and virtually defining the sound of soul jazz on the west coast scene of the 60s!
