❔

Classic pop soul jazz from the inventor of the genre! Ramsey's funky piano is backed by some soulful arrangements handled by Richard Evans – in a really tight style that includes great percussion, electric bass, and an all-out kicking style that makes even the mellowest tunes groove! Evans really adds a lot to the set – expanding the core groove of the Lewis trio with a proud and righteous Chicago approach – really bringing some "soul" to the soul jazz sound of the group, with incredible results! Titles include "Money In the Pocket", "Wade In the Water", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Up Tight", and "Hold It Right There".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Stereo blue label pressing, with deep groove. Cover has some aging along the opening.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ramsey Lewis

Ramsey
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint-
A sweet late 70s groover from Ramsey – not as all-out electric as some of his earlier work for Columbia, but done with some nice arrangements that have a full and soulful feel! There's a bit of Kalimba/Earth Wind & Fire soul to the mix – and some tracks have production by James ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

In Crowd
Argo, 1965. Very Good-
Easily one of the biggest selling jazz albums of the 60s – a crowning achievement for Ramsey Lewis and his popular trio with Eldee Young on bass and Redd Holt on drums! The set was recorded live at the Bohemian Caverns in DC, and the trio are perfect in the setting – going at the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Bryant

Ray Bryant Touch
Cadet, 1967. Very Good+
Simple stuff – but very nice! Ray's working here in a live trio setting – ala Ramsey Lewis or Les McCann from the same time – and his work on the album has a similar gutbuckety soul feel to it. The rhythm section of Jimmy Rowser bass and Rudy Collins drums is very tight – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Bryant

Slow Freight
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
A killer album by soul jazz pianist Ray Bryant! The title track, "Slow Freight", is an amazing 10 minute groover that moves at a very slow pace (just like a freight train), and which features some very cool ad-lib talking by Paul Serrano – a pretty groovy touch that really adds a ... Woody Herman

Heavy Exposure
Cadet, 1969. Very Good+
Excellent stuff – a record that we love it to death, and listen to all the time! Woody Herman's band meets the soulful arrangements of Richard Evans, and the whole thing cooks nicely in the Chess studios in Chicago. The result is a tasty blend of soulful big band tracks, with a strident ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Bryant

Swahili Strut
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent bit of funky stuff from LA trumpeter Bobby Bryant. The set was recorded for Cadet in LA, features tight arangements by Bryant, and a lot of nice long cuts that have a bit more of a groove than some of his other recordings (although most of them are pretty great). Tracks include " ... LP, Vinyl record album

Grant Green

Alive!
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good-
A really fantastic album from guitarist Grant Green – a set that's every bit as great as his other Blue Note funk albums from the time – but in a very different way! First off, the group has vibes – played by the more obscure Willie Bivens, sometimes with this hard chromatic ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
More of a soul album than a jazz album – and a stripped-down mellow set that has Les singing and playing keyboards with a quartet that includes Miroslaw Kudykowski on guitar. Cuts include "Everywhere I Go, People Ask Me a Question", "Woman, Come Home", "I've Been ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Sketches Of Spain
Columbia, 1960. Very Good+
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album

Benny Golson

Turning Point
Mercury, 1963. Very Good+
An incredible, and oft-overlooked album from the great Benny Golson – and one of the few early albums that really point the way to his huge run of work for decades to come! The style here is a bit looser, and more open than some of Golson's previous albums – less of a focus on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Improvising Artists Inc, 1978. Very Good+
Beautiful solo piano work from Sun Ra – presented in a style that's nicely different from his material on Saturn Records! Ra plays solo on his own compositions – "Sky & Sun", "I Am We Are I", "Thoughts On Thoth" – plus some older material that he ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Donaldson

Sassy Soul Strut
Blue Note, 1973. Sealed
Plenty of sass, and plenty of soul – a great mix of modes from the mighty Lou Donaldson! The set has Lou expanding his sound a bit from the harder funk of Blue Note dates from a few years before – working with arranger George Butler, who gives the record a cool electric vibe – ...
