Jug & Sonny

LP (Item 21692) Chess, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

✈
❔

A nice little album – featuring some of the sides that Gene Ammons cut "off contract" for Chess/Argo during the early 60s, and ones that feature him paired with Sonny Stitt, his longtime partner in legendary tenor battles from the 50s. The two horns aren't really locked in combat here, but they do complement each other nicely on the album's mellow groovers and ballad tracks. Titles include "Cha Bootie", "Tenor Eleven", "The Last Mile", and "Full Moon".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Boss Tenors
Verve, 1961. Very Good
Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt go head to head in this classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! Chess, Early 50s/1963. Sealed
A great set – and for more reasons than one! Most of the album features rare early 78s by jazz baritonist Leo Parker – one of the real giants on the instrument, and a player with a hard-wailing tone that makes it sound more like a tenor than a clunky giant-sized horn. Parker's tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... Blue Mitchell

Collision In Black
Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+
An excellent pairing of funk talents – the tight trumpet of Blue Mitchell, and the super-soulful backings of Monk Higgins! Higgins has a groove that was schooled in the funky 45 underground of Chicago – and here, he really finds a great way to pick things up for Mitchell – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1975. Very Good+
