Horace Silver — Stylings Of Silver (RVG remaster edition) ... CD 9.99

A great Horace Silver album – and one of the rarest! The record features some top-line material that virtually defines Silver's post-Jazz Messengers sound – tracks that come out with a hard and heavy groove, yet which also have a lightness in the mix too – a sense of play and lyricism that's always made Silver's soul deeper than most of his contemporaries! The group on the set is top-shelf all the way through – with Art Farmer on trumpet and Hank Mobley on tenor – alongside a rhythm team that includes Teddy Kotick on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Titles include "Metamorphosis", "Home Cookin", "No Smokin", and "Soulville".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Still sealed – 70s pressing or earlier. Cover has a small cut corner.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

An amazing set by Lee Morgan – and one that was recorded in the 60s, but not issued until many years later! The album has this really weird sound, which is a combination of Morgan's trumpet, Wayne Shorter's tenor, Herbie Hancock's piano, and Bobby Hutcherson's vibes – the last of which ... Bud's second LP for Blue Note – a firey batch of trio tracks that feature George Duvivier on bass and Art Taylor on drums – some of Powell's best work from the time, and a nearly all-classic set of bop piano tracks! 5LPs, and just about every track that Bud recorded for Blue Note (except, we think, for a few more alternate takes that may have shown up in recent years.) Most of the set's straight numbers, and there's less "alternates" here than you'd think – which makes sense, because Blue Note ... LP, Vinyl record album

Baby Face Willette

Stop & Listen
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint-
One of only two albums that organist Baby Face Willette cut for Blue Note – and it's a killer! The record is a hard-wailing trio format – with Willette on organ, Grant Green on guitar, Ben Dixon on drums – and it's got a sound that's very similar to Green's excellent Grant's ... Blue Note, 1969. Very Good+
An excellent pairing of funk talents – the tight trumpet of Blue Mitchell, and the super-soulful backings of Monk Higgins!
