Maiden Voyage

LP (Item 2160) Cadet, 1968 — Condition: Very Good
One of the key records from the Cadet/Concept scene in late 60s Chicago – a tremendous collaboration between pianist Ramsey Lewis and arranger Charles Stepney – and the kind of record that took soul and jazz to a whole new level! Ramsey on his own is great enough at this point – but add in Stepney's touch, and the record becomes something really brilliant – a blend of soaring strings, groovy rhythms, and spaciously stepping piano lines – all held together with a tremendous amount of creative imagination! The group here features a young Maurice White on drums and Cleveland Eaton on bass – both hitting a groove that's quite different than the Ramsey Lewis Trio sound of years back, with a lot more space, a lot hipper rhythms, and just the right sort of groove to match Stepney's sophisticated touches. The piano gets a bit electric at times, but is mostly acoustic overall – and titles include a great version of Minnie Riperton's "Les Fleur", a funky version of "Mighty Quinn", and the cuts "Afro Boogaloo Twist", "Maiden Voyage", "Ode", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", "Only When I'm Dreaming", and "Eternal Journey".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue fade label stereo pressing. Cover has ring & edge wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ramsey Lewis

Love Notes
Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
A great little album of mid 70s funk from Ramsey Lewis – very much in the mode of his Earth, Wind, & Fire related work – no surprise, since the album's dedicated to Charles Stepney, whose influence was such a key part of the sound of the group, and of some of Ramsey's other Kalimba-p ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cadet, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A collection of Ramsey's work on Cadet/Argo that focuses mostly on the groovy uptempo tracks from the mid 60s – when Lewis had cracked the pop instrumental charts with soulful versions of bigger hits. Titles include "The In Crowd", "Function At The Junction", "Soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Mother Nature's Son
Cadet, 1968. Very Good
One of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums of all time – an incredible reworking of tunes by The Beatles, done in collaboration with Cadet Records studio maestro Charles Stepney – who brings in some amazing arrangements and production styles to the record! The tunes are familiar, but the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Willis Jackson

Smoking With Willis
Cadet, 1965. Very Good
A great album from Willis Jackson – a real sleeper, and with a very groovy feel! Willis smokes with an organ combo that has Butch Cornell at the keys, and which also features Vince Corrao on guitar and Franklyn Robinson on trumpet. The tracks are a mix of originals and Beatles covers ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Bryant

Ray Bryant Touch
Cadet, 1967. Very Good+
Simple stuff – but very nice! Ray's working here in a live trio setting – ala Ramsey Lewis or Les McCann from the same time – and his work on the album has a similar gutbuckety soul feel to it. The rhythm section of Jimmy Rowser bass and Rudy Collins drums is very tight – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

Lean On Me
Cadet, Early 70s. Very Good
A great little Shirley Scott album – perhaps her best for Cadet! Unlike the others, which have a complicated set of arrangements, this one has a stripped-down jazz funk feel that reminds us a lot of the classic early 70s groovers on Prestige Records. Shirley plays some very nice lines on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk

We Free Kings
Mercury, 1961. Very Good
A hell of a record from the young Roland Kirk – one of his first for Mercury Records, and the start of a great run of genius in the 60s! Kirk is mindblowing here – playing tenor, flute, manzello, and stritch – often at the same time, as pictured on the cover – a mode that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Smith

House Party
Blue Note, 1958. Good
One of the best hard-wailing all-star sessions that Jimmy did so well for Blue Note! The album features an amazing array of top-line players – like Tina Brooks, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Lou Donaldson, Art Blakey, and Kenny Burrell – and they all play with Smith in differing ... Johnny Pate

Date With Johnny Pate
King, 1959. Very Good
A wonderful live set from the great bassist Johnny Pate – working here in the early years of his career, before his soul arrangements with The Impressions, or his famous funk albums of the 70s! The vibe is great – very open and spontaneous, captured at Chicago's London House – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good
Smoking live material from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – a set recorded at Birdland, aka The Jazz Corner Of The World – home to a number of key performances by the group! Jackie McLean

Demon's Dance
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good+
A pivotal session from the late 60s – one that has Jackie McLean pulling things back a bit from his "new thing" period, and turning towards the spiritual soulful groove that would characterize his early 70s work! The album bristles with excitement – still very much informed ... LP, Vinyl record album

John La Porta Quartet

Most Minor
Everest, 1958. Very Good+
Great work by a player we've always loved – but who rarely gets his due! John LaPorta had one of the sharpest altos of the 50's, but for some reason, his talents were not nearly as recognized as those of similar players like Lee Konitz and Charlie Mariano. His earlier work with Mingus has ... LP, Vinyl record album
