Sunburst

LP (Item 21152) Blue Note, 1975 — Condition: Very Good+
Funky fusion doesn't get any funkier than this – and the album's one of the greatest 70s recordings by jazz funk trumpeter Eddie Henderson! The album's got a harder edge than a lot of Eddie's other records of the decade – razor sharp rhythms crackling away underneath a sublime space-heavy mix of keyboards, bass, saxes, and Eddie's funky trumpet. The group includes work by Bennie Maupin on reeds, George Duke on keyboards, Julian Priester on trombone, and Harvey Mason on drums – and the great Skip Drinkwater is at the production chair, cutting the grooves here with a lot more fire than in some of his later work! The whole thing's great – and titles include "Involuntary Bliss", "Galaxy", "Kumquat Kids", and "Explodition".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tony Williams

Foreign Intrigue
Blue Note, 1985. Near Mint-
An intriguing little set from drummer Tony Williams – and a set that shows him still very much in command of his talents well into the 80s! Aladdin Sessions
Blue Note, Late 40s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Some of the best early work by Prez – all recorded in small combo sessions for Aladdin Records during the years 1945 through 1948. Duke Pearson

Right Touch
Blue Note, 1967. Sealed
One of the hippest sets that Duke Pearson ever recorded – and an all-out Blue Note soul jazz set that's even better than Pearson's classic Sweet Honey Bee! Duke's style is deeper and more farther-reaching here – with echoes of styles used at the time by Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Reece

Soundin' Off
Blue Note, 1960. Near Mint-
A killer quartet session by Brit trumpeter Dizzy Reece, recorded as one of his three American albums for Blue Note during the late 50s! Paul Chambers

Bass On Top
Blue Note, Late 50s. Near Mint-
One of the most obscure of the Paul Chambers albums on Blue Note – and one of the most interesting as well! Kenny Burrell

KB Blues
Blue Note (Japan), 1957. Near Mint-
A real hard-burner from Kenny Burrell – a set that was recorded for Blue Note in the guitarist's early career, but not issued by the label until the 70s – and even then only in Japan! Some of Bobbi Humphrey's greatest work of the post-Blue Note years – an album that's filled with soulful fusion tunes throughout, all with a great focus on her funky flute! Andre Hodeir

Jazz Et Jazz
Philips, 1958. Near Mint-
Brilliant work from the modernist underground late 50s Paris! Andre Hodeir was one of the city's best-known jazz composers and arrangers at the time – a key part of the postwar scene, and its development into its own style away from strictly American sounds. Hodier's working here with a ... LP, Vinyl record album
