Fat Albert Rotunda

LP (Item 2103) Warner, 1969 — Condition: Sealed
A crucial record in the career of keyboard legend Herbie Hancock – the first session in which he really gets all-out funky, but in a way that's different than his spacier jams to come in the 70s! At some level, the album links the early soul jazz modes of Herbie's first few Blue Note recordings with the more electric style that he'd approach in the coming years – with Hancock on both electric and acoustic piano, in a very hip group that includes Joe Henderson on tenor and flute, Johnny Coles on trumpet, Garnett Brown on trombone, Buster Williams on electric bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums – a group who are almost more like an Atlantic Records late 60s jazz combo than a Warner Brothers one – a quality that definitely comes through in these tunes! The music has a fantastic mix of soulful grooves and deeper ideas – and tracks include the oft-sampled "Fat Mama", an early version of the classic "Tell Me A Bedtime Story", and the tracks "Wiggle Waggle", "Fat Albert Rotunda", "Lil Brother", and "Jessica".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Limited 180 gram Rhino/Scorpio reissue, still sealed with hype stickers.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.
