It Is Love

LP (Item 20722) Verve, 1987 — Condition: Very Good+

Strange album for Marlena – recorded after her soul albums, and done in a live setting with a small group (Buddy Montgomery, Larry Ball, and Paul Humphrey). Marlena's ostensibly trying to get back to her jazz roots (as was Dee Dee Bridgewater around the same time), and she kind of does, given the song list (mostly standards), but the sound you'd expect still isn't there, despite her best efforts. Titles include "Go Away Little Boy", "On The Street Where You Live", "Unforgettable", and "Day In Day Out".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Verve Digital pressing. Cover has light wear and a name in marker.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rare Earth

Dreams/Answers
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good+
The funky blue-eyed debut of Rare Earth – an early Detroit combination of soul, rock, and funk! The group really sprang to fame on Motown right after this early album for Verve – but this set may be even harder and heavier than any of their later records – produced by Dennis ... James Brown

Bodyheat
Polydor, 1976. Very Good
An enduring classic from James Brown – quite possibly the strongest of his late 70s albums, and a record that nicely balances the harder funk of the early part of the decade with a more sophisticated style that almost gets slightly jazzy at times! The vocals are planted strongly at the top ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions

Ridin' High
ABC, 1966. Very Good
The title and cover say it all – because The Impressions here are at the top of their game – riding high on a tremendous wave of soul, and soaring forth with a sense of pride and power few other groups could match! Impact

Impact
Atco, 1976. Very Good+
Plenty of Impact from this great Philly group – a soaring quartet who harmonize with some great Bobby Eli arrangements – at a level that shines as strongly as the best 70s work by Blue Magic or The Spinners! Impact never broke the big time as strongly, but they're a great group in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gladys Knight & The Pips

Anthology
Motown, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Although Gladys Knight & The Pips didn't cut their first recordings or their biggest recordings for Motown, they did still do a pretty nice job at the label – as you'll hear on this nice 2LP set that brings together a nice batch of their best tracks. Includes their original version of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1983. Very Good+
What can we say? All the best-remembered club tracks by one of the world's most unique soul artists. We're much more partial to these soulful club cuts than his later hi-energy singles, though each side is mixed into a medley, with the first side featuring "Do You Wanna Funk", "Dan ... Mercury, 1975. Very Good+
A big move to Mercury for the Dells, after a pretty successful run at Cadet in the late 60s and early 70s – but the group's still in fine form vocal-wise, and on many of these they're still working with the great Don Davis, who gave the band a strong 70s soul groove, similar to his work with ... Fatback

Hot Box
Spring, 1980. Very Good
Man, it must have been something to hear this record blasting out of a boombox back in the old days – especially if it was the magenta-hued one on the cover! The groove here is strong and loud – plenty of bass and beats at the bottom, and even a few surprising early electro touches ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rodney Franklin

You'll Never Know
Columbia, 1980. Very Good+
Fully-formed genius from the amazing Rodney Franklin – one of the best keyboard stars to emerge from the late 70s scene! John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... Kitty White

Sweet Talk
Roulette, 1958. Very Good
One of the fullest-staffed albums ever recorded by Kitty White – but a set that still gives her plenty private, personal space! The album features different groupings of players who include Benny Carter on alto, Ted Nash on tenor and flute, Harry Edison on trumpet, Larry Bunker on vibes, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jon Hendricks

Tell Me The Truth
Arista, 1975. Very Good+
One of the greatest records ever by Jon Hendricks – one of our favorite male jazz singers of all time! The album's an obscure 70s session that features Jon opening up from earlier days – moving into a bit of soul, a bit of funk, yet still keeping things really strong on the jazz tip. ...
