Al Green — Call Me ... CD 6.99

Al Green, 1973 – what could be better? The king of Memphis soul is at the height of his powers here – working in a setting that yielded less chart hits than some of his other albums for Hi Records, but which is still as sublime as the rest – thanks to an undeniable studio magic guided by Willie Mitchell! The sound is full, but never slick or smooth – and Al's vocals are tremendous throughout (but honestly, did you expect anything less?) Titles include "Call Me (Come Back Home)", "Here I Am (Come & Take Me)", "Funny How Time Slips Away", and the beautiful "Have You Been Making Out OK?"  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has some ring & edge wear. Label has some pen and a label sticker.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Full Of Fire
Hi Records, 1976. Very Good
Hi Records perfection from the mighty Al Green – slightly later than some of his key early hits, but a record that shows Green still taking fire on all burners! Livin For You
Hi Records, 1973. Sealed
Hard to go wrong with Al Green at this point – 1973, when the mighty one was at the height of his secular soul powers – and when the sweetly compressed production style of Willie Mitchell just couldn't miss! There's a homey, earthy feel to the record that's really great – a sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hi Records, 1960. Very Good
Very early grooves from Willie Mitchell – a set that's got a bit more R&B than in Willie's later years – with less trumpet in the mix, and more of an overall punch in the rhythms! Guitar is quite strong on most of these instrumentals – and there's some nice tenor, too – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Willie Mitchell

Soul Bag
Hi Records, Late 60s. Very Good+
Willie's Soul Bag is pretty darn deep – a tight mixture of trumpet-heavy originals – all given sock-solid Hi Records soul production! The album's one of Mitchell's most smoking – and in addition to a few well-chosen covers, the set's also got some great originals – ... LP, Vinyl record album

A great 2LP selection of work from Ann Peebles – the hardest-hitting singer to ever record for Hi Records, and almost that label's female answer to their strengths with Al Green! Willie Mitchell produced, and the set's full of gems from Ann's best years. LP, Vinyl record album

Syl Johnson

Uptown Shakedown
Hi Records, 1978. Near Mint-
A different sound than usual for Syl Johnson – but a record that still has loads of those amazing vocals we love from Syl!
